Advantage Telecom offer - good or not??

Had a call to move our 2 business lines and 1 domestic from BT to Advantage Telecom as the carrier. Haven't recieved the T&C's yet so need to have a look at the small print in details but topline details are:
Line rental £22.30/quarter
Call charges £0.9p/min landlines, 9-12p/min mobile and free AT line to line
BT line services remain with BT - like call minder, broadband etc.
5 yr contract - fixed rates but will price match any other on market.
£375 get out fee per line

This offer does save us money I'm just nervous to sign up for such a long period. Anyone found problems with them etc??

    Why a 5 year contract?

Why such a high 'get out' fee?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

In answer to your original question Midderscl, that appears to confirm the latter.

  • Thank you all. It seems you have saved us from ourselves. Basic charges do seem far too good to be true and that 5 yr contract ?!?

    Thank you...........:j

And you'll find that the charges would doubtless soar after the first year 'cheap' year. So you'd be facing 4 very expensive years after that.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • i got cold called by advantage telecom and was interested by what they said cheap calls and cheap line rental. nice.
i wanted to read more about it so asked for details in the post, stupid me gave the bank details next thing i know they set up a direct debit and the line was getting switch next week. No confirmation needed. strange! phoned them up to cancel and got through to a customer service advisor that called me "stupid" for not wanting a cheaper phone and broadband provider i was amazed by how rude he was, it took ten minutes of saying "cancel this order" and him slagging bt off and me before he gave up. BT may not have the quickest customer service but i have never been insulted and once the ball was rolling they were quick to responed. hopefully they lower there prices like they say they will. at least they have a more managable contract length which gives alot of freedom

I suggest you cancel the DD immediately, or you may find they have taken a very sizeable 'early termination charge' out of your account. I would also inform BT that you have cancelled the switch and that any attempt by this company to switch you should be rejected.
And report them for attempted slamming as well.

This company just called me, and to be honest I was tempted for a minute. Asked them to send me literature as I don't like deciding over phone, so she pointed me to their website. Luckily whilst on computer i decided to Google, so thanks, I've decided against it after reading these posts. As they say, there's no such thing as a free lunch!

Apparently there are quite a lot of fees and penalties...
go to their website and click "legals" at the bottom

They say 50% of line rental but this soon reverts to 15%
  • im surprised at some of these comments,
i have been with advantage telecom now for about 6 months,
and although the first bill was high as i opted to pay the first years line rental up front, (although i was given the choice if i wanted to or not) my other 5 bills have been alot less than what bt ever charged me for my calls, my last bt bill was over £40 for calls and now advantage telecom are only sending my bills for less than £10 a month,

so even when i start paying the line rental again im sure it wont be as high as £40 total bill

im glad im moved away from BT, ive saved so much money

Sorry tom1123, a first-time poster singing the praises of a firm which has received almost universal condemnation has little credibility.

However, it's nice to know they're using the Advantage name at the moment (Elite and Optimum being kept dormant for now then).
