UPDATE - problems connecting to sky wireless broadband on laptop

Firstly I am very not tech friendly so my apologies for any incompetencies I may have.
Looking for some help please - I have just moved house and taken out a new sky package (prev had the same one but took new one for cashback!).
Anyway my broadband (sky unlimited) was activated yesterday.
I can connect to this with my laptop using the yellow (ethernet??) cable but if I disconnect this I am only able to get local access.
Was on phone to sky for ages last night and advisor thinks that because I only have 1meg speed (although according to my e mail the line can support up to 4 - she says this is not possible) this is why I am not able to connect wirelessly.
The new router (D-link) they have sent is a different make to my previous one (Netgear) - could this be the problem?
Was talking to my mum about it and she only has half a meg but still has wireless connection (she is with BT and lives in a different area) on pc and laptop.
I get an error message about rebooting router or putting in a different IP address when trying to connect wirelessly and have done this but still not working.
Am getting v v v frustrated any help much appreciated - thanks
UPDATE
Ok so today I have tried again to get a wireless connection through my laptop (sorry for the late response).
I can still only get "local access".
I have tried to "diagnose and repair" and get the following information:
Your modem or router is not available.
If you are connected to a workplace or school network, contact you administrator.
Click here when you are done so windows can chack to see if the problem is resolved.
[*]Automatically get new IP settings for the network adaptor "wireless Network Connection"
OR
[*]Reset the network adaptor "Wireless Network Connection"
Resetting the adaptor can sometimes resolve an intermittent problem.
The weird thing is is that I have come on the PC to type this and I am able to get a wireless connection on here no problem. I am also still able to connect to the internet wirelessly at my mum's house so don't think there is a problem with my laptop???!!!
Again help much appreciated before I dare to call back sky
Thanks

Well for a start this "Was on phone to sky for ages last night and advisor thinks that because I only have 1meg speed (although according to my e mail the line can support up to 4 - she says this is not possible) this is why I am not able to connect wirelessly." is truly meaningless shoite from the "advisor"
You are currently connected wirelessly from one pc but cannot get your laptop to connect this way. Is that correct?

Hi yeah sorry for the ramble but that is correct (and I have been able to prev connect to braodband wirelessly through this laptop but not this router/at this house)0
-
Have you entered the wireless key exactly as seen either on the sticker located on the bottom of the router or from the routers admin pages?
Wireless passwords are case sensitive meaning that PassWord is not the same as password0 -
yip did that (I've now done it so often I know it by heart - lol)0

Its just possible that your wireless signal is suffering from interference.
However I assume you have checked that wireless is turned on, you have correctly identified the SSID of your wireless signal and entered to passcode correctly as per previous posts.
So to check for interference download and install inSSIDer on your laptop.
When you run it the programme will scan for all available wireless networks and their frequencies, have a look for yours.
If there is another on top of it log onto your router and change the wireless channel.

Just reread the thread, so you can get wireless access to another PC at the same location, and that one is connecting to your network? That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
yeah penrhyn my home PC is currently connected wirelessly but the laptop will not allow me to do so (local only without the ethernet cable).
Could it be there is a problem compatability for the type of modem sky have provided?0 -
I doubt it or loads of folks would be having problems.
I'd give changing the wireless channel on the router a go.
Access the router with http://192.168.0.1/sky_router_status.html
user admin, password sky
Find the wireless setting and change the channel.
You might want to try inSSIDer first. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
I have just come off the phone to sky and the problem is now fixed.
Seems the security on the router was not compatible (or something like that).
He changed me from WPA/WPA2 to WEP (hope that means something to you guys but it doesn't to me) and I now have a new security key. Also moved me from auto channel select to channel 11
THanks so much to everyone for all their help I am a very happy bunny to be able to sit on sofa using computer rather than at table x0 -

Can you tell us please, exactly which laptop (make, model, operating system) the Sky script monkey told you was incompatible with their router?
Would you still be a happy bunny if you knew that your wireless network is not really secure? WEP encryption was effectively replaced by WPA/WPA2 many years ago now, as WEP is easily hacked.
You seem to be telling us that your connection problem was caused by the encryption type and the wireless channel setting? Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
I agree with espresso! That gum you like is coming back in style.0
