    great thread btw :D
  • In my experience using one credit card, payed off each month is a useful tool. However you need to record in a spending diary each transaction and decuct it from your budget, otherwise they are impossible to control, which is why so many get into trouble with them.

I agree but i dont think ive got the disipline to do this yet too much of a temptation at the mo its a bit like AA admitting you have a problem then abstaining from it. Maybe in the future i can get to the stage where i can buy something then pay it off at the end of the month but im more inclined to spend spend spend so for now its better to have none.

I got my first CC when we bought our house in 1996 and it went downhill from there only wish i could be as good with the finances. Whatever you do dont succumb to the lure of the CC congrats on having the common sense not to get into debt.

  • I had six.....just paid off Barclaycard and the phoned for the BT rate which they wud either do at 0% for 6 months with a 2.5% handling charge, or 6.9% for the life of the transfer with no handling fee. I have now transferred the balance from the card with the highest rate and a couple of others to the 6.9 rate so that I can pay a bit more each month to one card and actually see the balances going down!!!!

Edit: BTW I did cut them all up (apart from one which I now keep for emergencies only) but I keep them all in little envelopes in files with their respective statements so that I can transfers balances as you need the expiry date for that......

Or you can do what I do and use it solely to buy petrol. There's a limit as to how much petrol I can buy.
