Email your councillors to ask them what they are doing about rogue LLs

That was so easy to do. I just had to put in my postcode and Shelter found my councilers' and wrote the email for me. One click and it was sent.:D
Thanks for posting this thread Artful.RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.
Read the sticky on the House Buying, Renting & Selling board.0 -

Artful
whilst I absolutely agree with what you say about Shelter England can I add a little plea to the Welsh on the board for Shelter Cymru, Shelter Englands sister organisation.
They are not funded through Shelter England but have to raise their own funds they have their own website and are also a charity and always glad of donations to help them with their work in Wales.

One of the two major Landlord Associations, the National Landlords Association, agrees... see...
http://www.landlords.org.uk/news/pressreleases/2010/pressrelease-20100908councilsmustprosecuteroguelandlords.html
.David Salusbury, Chairman, NLA, in calling for further action by councils, said:
“We roundly condemn the worst excesses in the private-rented sector where a small minority of landlords choose to exploit their tenants by offering sub-standard property which can endanger lives. This is unacceptable and local authorities must act.
“We agree with Shelter that most private landlords are responsible and honest in how they deal with their tenants and look after the properties. But where landlords wilfully ignore the rules and regulations put in place to protect tenants, landlords should expect severe penalties.
“Local authorities simply must do better by adopting a ‘zero tolerance’ approach to those landlords who wilfully break the law. If this rogue element within the sector goes unchallenged, then reputable landlords are tarnished and the image of the private-rented sector is damaged.”0 -
I sent an email to my councillors through the Shelter website. I received a reply from one who attacked the Labour Party, which is funny becuase the Conservatives (his party) have scrapped the laws the Labour Party were in the process of introducing.
He offered no indication as to what he was willing to do locally. Very disappointing.0 -

they were represented by Lisa Giovannetti - she's a great barrister, I've been against her several times....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
Good to see that the Law Society has taken a firm view about unlawful eviction. They struck off a convicted LL from the rolls:

Mr. Onwuku was a trainee solicitor. He wrote abusive letters to his tenant on his firm's headed paper. this was the first:"We have been instructed by our client, Mr Onwuka, regarding your behaviour in his house and to take the necessary measure that is appropriate. We are informed that you engaged yourself in a dubious act of deception and falsification. He said that you bought from British Telecom a BT DECT FAX in his name and have failed to pay BT the sum of £316.00 due.We consider this act to be criminal and obnoxious. As a result, our client has instructed us to give you notice to vacate his room by 12pm on 26 November 1999. If you fail to vacate the room, our client has instructed us to take the following measures:-1) We will report you to the Immigration Enforcement Unit, for your removal from this country. Our client considers you to be a Bogus Asylum Seeker, who is not fit to be granted asylum in this country.2) We will pass this letter and information to the London Borough of Waltham Forest, Asylum Seekers Unit, informing them that you are a Bogus Asylum Seeker.3) We will pass your record to our Debt Collection Unit for enforcement of the £316.00 debt from you.4) We are going to register this debt with our Court Bailiff who will call to recover this debt from you, wherever you may be.Finally, you are to vacate 171 Belgrade Road on 26 November, 1999 at 12pm. Failure to comply, will result in your paying a price. If you need assistance we will recommend that you seek advice from any source of your choice."...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

I could find that half-funny if it wasn't so serious. This was 10 years ago. "Obnoxious" lol.
Just finishing off the associated review of the page you linked to.
Another slippery little chancer, full of me me me, and full of accusations about others. Whilst trying to champion himself to everyone as the wronged party - with a history of suspicious behaviour, including to another tenant.
It seemed to take the Law Society quite a bit of time to conclude their decision, but seems they reached the correct decision. Can only hope he went on to regret being struck off for his actions, and maybe denied what otherwise would have been a highly-paid 10 year boom period as a solicitor.0 -
