Second line required for broadband only

Hi all.

I am currently with Virgin Media and have no complaints with their wireless broadband. I find it fast and reliable. Both of these are important to me as I work from home and do almost all of my business online.

I now need to get a second line installed. I am not interested in making phone calls from this line, I only need wireless broadband. However, what I do need is a service where, each time I reboot the router, a new IP address is sent out immediately. This does not happen with Virgin.

Any recommendations? The maximum speed in my area is 5.5 mbps, according to BT (I get well over 9.0 with Virgin). I believe that BT and Talktalk will be able to meet my requirements, but on this forum I read nothing but horror stories about poor CS and connectivity problems. Which is the lesser of these two evils, or is there another provider I should consider? I estimate the charge for line rental and broadband to be around £25 per month.

Thanks in anticipation.

When I wanted to change my IP address with virgin, I just changed the clone MAC address on the router and when I re-booted it my IP address changed.

You may want to consider O2 if you are in their LLU unbundled exchange area.

They put in new lines for £85.
  • Why do you need two lines is it not possible to share one line in your house?

First of all is your current line cable or phone line if so you might be able to have virgin to upgrade you to 20 or even 50Mbps which will be considerably faster that what you can get over LLU

Tell us your reasoning not to have two lines and weather your current product is virgin cable or reach (Resold BT product)
  • Thanks for the replies, guys.

I ran this suggestion by a friend of mine who is a "techie". His advice is that this is not something I should be doing, though not being technical myself I didn't understand his explanation and cannot reproduce it here!

My current service is Virgin cable.

The reason for having two lines that I need a second line that sends out a new IP address each time I reboot the router. This must be completely separate from my main internet service through Virgin cable.

What kind of usage will your 2nd connection have? Do you need a device with a high or unlimited amount of data transfer, or just the bare minimum?

And why on earth do you need it anyway? If you tell us what you are trying to do, there might be an easier and cheaper way of doing it.

My second connection will probably only require bare minimum use, so a 10gb download limit should suffice.

The reason for the second line is so that one person in the house can connect to the internet and, when they need to, they can reboot the new router to send out a different IP address each time. When they do so, the others in the house can continue to receive uninterrupted internet access through the main Virgin internet service.

Take a look at http://www.torproject.org/ which may do what you want and doesn't need an extra line.
  • I'm curious as to why you need this, you'll be looking for a service with a dynamic ip address. If its just the internet then have you considered mobile broadband if in a descent 3g area? Would save you money on a second line installation and unecessary line rental.

That isn't a reason. Why do they need a new IP address is what I was getting at :)

Thanks, but unfortunately using the Onion Router doesn't meet my requirements. I tried it and immediately hit a problem in that I could not access one particular site which I need for business.

    I appreciate your suggestions, guys.

It is clear to me that some of posters have an issue with my requirement of sending out a new IP address each time I reboot. It is for a perfectly legitimate reason.

I represent a number of clients and do business on their behalf; business which they are unable to do themselves, personally. The business is done online. One option is for me to go to each client's home and do the business on their behalf from there, but this is time consuming and not always convenient for all concerned. The alternative is to do all the business under the one roof; but in order to do so I need to send out a different IP address for each client as no two clients can use the same IP address.
