Hi, well I have taken the plunge and bought myself a lovely 6.5 litre slow cooker (half price for £15 :j). I was planning on making a stew tonight and putting it on low in the morning for it to cook all day while I am at work. My mother however, has convinced me that it might not be safe as she says she would never leave anything on to cook when not at home. So now I am worried. Can anyone give their advice re this? If I can't leave it on when I'm not home then I might as well take it back to Argos as it would be of no benefit otherwise. Do any of you leave yours on all day while you are out at work?0

They use very little power so it is a bit like leaving a light bulb on when you go out. I would leave it on all day ... no different from leaving a fridge or range on all day.0

All the time, that's the reason I got mine, nothing nicer than coming home to a cooked meal in my slow cooker.
Don't worry, they are perfectly safe to leave unattended.0 -
never had a problem and it gets left on for 6-9 hours at a spell
you'll come home and have a lovely smelling dinner waiting

Hi Kingston
Glad you have your answer. I suggest you use the SC first when you are in the house, and build your confidence up. My Mum berated me too in the beginning
I'll add this to the existing slow cooker quick questions thread to keep all the info together
thanks

Modern SCs are required to reach a certain temperature in a minimum time. Health 'n' safety thing. I don't think they necessarily run any hotter, they just get hot quicker.
Best to use it a couple of times on weekends or days off so you get to know how it behaves and how far you can trust it unattended. Mileage varies between models and manufacturers.
Never had a cremation in 30 years, but one did die part-way through the cook (mid-90's).0 -
Hi, someone has just given me an old slow cooker. Perfect working order but no instructions or anything. I wanted to try it out tomorrow and aim to use chicken and possibly sausage as well if possible. Anyone able to tell me what to cook, and how to cook it? Thanks!0

my kids have asked me to make a casserole in mine with mattesons pork sausage (i know!)
has anyone ever used this in their slocooker or will this be a first on the oldstyle board??0 -
Hi Whiteguineapig
Excuse the ignorance but I don't know what Matteson sausages are (as opposed to "normal" sausages?)Maybe we don't have them in Northern Ireland?
I looked out a thread for you
Simple sausage casserole for the slow cooker
Hopefully it should give you plenty of variations and ideas. I'm sure the type of sausage doesn't really matter.
Hope this helps you
