Ooh someone posted a link, possibly on the old thread towards the end, although I know lots of folk have made their own using pipe insulation.

There's some on Ebay or Amazon, my local Poundstretcher had them last year.

They're probably quite easy to make, a piece of material with 2 long pockets either side stuffed with old rags or a piece of that foam tube stuff that you use to lag pipes.

Edit: just had a thought, I wonder if you could use empty kitchen foil rolls cut to size if you didn't have any foam lagging?

i bought a huge bag of dried cherry stones off ebay for this purpose. they're really good because you can wash the bag which you can't do with wheat or rice bags. mainly though i bought them because they aren't scented with nasty lavender (sorry folks but i'm allergic to it and to me it's horrid and in EVERYTHING uggh!)

i'm still to make mine but i got a good deal from ebay, it's worth checking if you want to make your own.
Doh! I should have saved all my cherry stones from what I scoffed over the summer! I had a quick look on Ebay but they seemed quite dear so I think I will go with rice or wheat, whichever works out cheaper. My plan is to make a little cover that I can wash so hopefully it won't get too yuk. But next year I will save my cherry stones thanks to you for the idea - now that's what I call frugal!

LOL - I thought everyone liked lavender! :D

I made mine last night with rice and lavender. I was pleasantly surprised at how long it held the heat:j
Oh lovely, hopefully I'll make mine soon. :)
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

Great ideas - its taken me three days to get through the whole thread but it was good to see that some of the stuff we already do, and pick up tips to do this year.
Someone asked a couple of days ago about salt for drives etc - I buy it from a garden centre nearby but its also at builders suppliers too, its usually in heavy sacks - I left it by the front door last year as our drive was like a skating rink and I had a few near falls, but our post man was horrified as he said people were stealing it so I took it into the garage to store instead. It does damage the surface its on though, our drive is destroyed with it, I look on it as a necessary evil as there was no way either car would get up the steep drive without it, but its worth being conservative with using it. :)

You can mix the salt with sharp sand :) It provides good grip :)

Struggling to find any cheap curtains or linings as 90" not long enough for my windows  which are all ceiling to floor, in my high ceilinged house :(

I have the same problem, I make my own but it's more like textile engineering than sewing, they're so huge. You could consider buying some cheap 90" drop and some smaller ones in the same width, adding a strip across the bottom of the 90" ones then covering the join with a suitable colour of ribbon could look quite stylish.
    Hope is not a strategy.

For anyone after thermals, uniqlo have an offer on their heat tech range at the moment (2 £9.99 items for £12.99, 2 £12.99 items for £19.99). They do excellent quality thermal tops that are nice enough to wear anywhere and japanese style body warmers which go under the clothes around the core(they're £6.99 so don't think they're on offer).
