I found wheat in the organic co-op - much dearer than what I'd pay to a farmer I'm sure but cheaper than the cherry stones and it will smell nicer than rice I think. I paid just under €2 for a kilo and that should do a decent size heat pack. Now I just have to get on with making it ... I've no sewing machine and I'm not the world's best sewer so I just hope it turns out ok!Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far!

Hello i thought i would join. I have been lurking for a while, but have just caught up with reading it all. I'm still quite behind with my planning although thanks to all the great ideas i now know more what i need to do. So far all i've done is get a dehumidifier for the bedrooms (downstairs flat and they are always damp, i think the idea came from here somewhere ), and i have to say it's great as it helps dry the washing, and warms the room a bit as well.0

Sorry to butt in,
Some people have asked about Water Storage here's a solution:Curry_Queen wrote: »You don't need a baby in the house to use Milton's sterilising fluid!
I use it for everything in place of regular anti-bacterial products and it saves a fortune as it's only £1.88 for 1250ml bottle at Tesco and will last me a month a more ... soaking dish cloths, pet dishes, wiping all kitchen/bathroom surfaces etc
It's effective against E.coli, Listeria, Salmonella, Shigella, Campylobacter, Rotavirus and Candida Albicans and much safer to use than bleach as it's non-toxic!
You can even add it (following directions on bottle) to water to make it safe for drinking
Cheers all, Pud.;)
I haven't used Milton for decades. Used to use it all the time.
Went looking for it yesterday and neither the bottles nor the tablets give any instructions for using it to make water safe.
There's a warning on the bottle saying it's highly dangerous and should not be ingested.

Ok- this is what I was told is best-
"Chlorine tablets
Tablets are far more convenient to carry, less subject to degradation by motion than household bleach they are a slightly different chemical (Sodium dichloroisocyanurate). The most common form uses 1 tablet per litre (although I would use two in cloudy water). Water should be left for 10 minutes after the tablet has been added. Puritabs (the most common type) claim effectiveness against Giardia."
I will get some of these just in case our water ever goes off.0 -
This says 2.5ml of Milton per 5 litres of water and leave for 15 minutes.

Having looked on the web, I think Milton may have changed their recipe. We used to use it when camping, one tablet per 5 gallon.
You can get iodine type purification tablets from camping shops or online, but they do have a shelf life, also becareful if your pregnant or breast feeding.
