oops, apologies ladies (and gents?) :o if I upset or annoyed you. I didn't mean to mock anyone for stocking up, you're all very sensible to do so, just I forget sometimes that I'm older and have done many of these things for years. I've not just been reading the posts to laugh or take the mickey, I've found some good advice here re things even I (yes, I admit I'm not perfect - well, not all the time ;)) have put to use for myself.

I have to admit I only have 24 loo rolls in my airing cupboard, I'm such a failure :(. But at least, unlike that poor dear Muriel P, I shall be safe from an avalanche...

You don't have to American to enjoy those biscuits, they are sooooo yummy :D.

We're not really a stocking-up family either - we live 2 seconds from both Aldi & Sainsbury's and I do monthly shops so I don't think I need much beyond that as even last winter's heavy snow only impaired us for a couple days at most :D. I'm more on here for the ideas about how to reduce heating bills! Can't face dishing out £25 each for chimney balloons so last year's solution of pillows/duvets up the chimney will have to do again I think!

For extra insulation you could add bubble wrap to the glass or make a bubble wrap blind.

I love American biscuits, I got my Mum to bring some back from her hols for me, she brought those pop and fresh tube things and got stopped and searched at customs as when her bag went through the x-ray they thought she had some sort of pipes in her bag....oops!
    They were yummy though:D:D

It's alright Sparrer, it's good every now and then to have a laugh at some of the things we are doing. I don't know what happens to loo rolls in our house but we seem to go through quite a few. It's not my cooking honestly Guv'na :rotfl: When I lived on my own a four pack of loo rolls would last probably about six weeks! Now it's more like two to three rolls a week!

Some things we will need to do others we won't. If you have family then you need to do extra things to get you through as opposed to if you are single or just a couple. My DH works for the emergency services and he tells me that unless people don't have to go out then they should stay at home, but sometimes that is not always possible especially now if your employers are expecting you to make the extra effort!

We have done far more this year than we have previously, painting the gates and gable ends has not been done for about seven or so years so that has been a priority for us, but next year we won't have to do that - hopefully. I looked out on Sunday morning watching the beads of water forming on the newly protected shed and felt good that after all that ruddy hard work it is protected now. Things like dried pasta, rice and tinned stuff has excellent long shelf dates on them and even if you don't get through it all during the next six months it will keep. We have even bought our first snow shovel together - arhhhhhh :D I did enjoy last winter, but looked at the garden and the things about the house when Spring broke cover and realised that some stuff had been hit hard by the extreme cold weather so if/when it does come round again I won't be worried about what should have been done.

    Hi All

    Just need some advice please!
I want to make a small thermal insulated Roman Blind for my bathroom. The room is small and gets mighty steamy after the shower has been used, and I'm worried that any fabric will go mouldy pretty quick.

Does anyone have any recommendations/ideas for the best fabrics to use (for outer layer and for the thermal insulation) in these conditions?

    THANKS EVERYONE!

have you considered oilcloth? i bought some off of ebay to put under our dining room table which has to be in the living room (only place for it) and i didn't want the carpet getting ruined. what we bought is flexible enough to make blinds with... the place i ordered from sells it by the meter sadly my history doesn't go far back enough for me to send you their link but i'm sure it wouldn't be too difficult to find

sparrer - I am older and the interesting thing is that when I was younger - a student in fact I really got into the self sufficiency thing convinced there was going to be a societal breakdown due to the cold war edginess of the time. This self sufficiency went as far as keeping a couple of sheep, shearing them by hand with old fashioned shears and learning to spin!!!! Growing veg was second nature and I was an expert on preserving and wine and beer making (used to drink then - lol). Lots of foraging (Richard Maybe Food for Free) Did the foil behind rads and had thick curtians everywhere - remember this was all pre internet so I spent hours in libraries and old book shops. Has a fried who had a jerset cow and she made cheese, sister had (still does) hens and I was on the point of keeping bees!!!
BUT THEN children arrived, marriage ended and I had to work all hours just to keep things together for kids and self and have to say over the years it all seeped away and I was the lego cook (just heat up and assemble food on plate) permanently exhausted and depressed to boot. Now I find I am middle aged and deeply depresse about the last 20 years of my life and not looking forward to the next 20. This board had been a real shot in the arm and although I still cry a lot - I actually feel as if I am DOING SOMETHING REAL FOR A CHANGE! For example Im going to make the plum jam this pm and I feel great about it.
You guys have ignited a long dead fire inside me and I am so gratefull to you all - big hugs from Norfolk!!!

Oilcloth is a great idea for a bathroom blind...thanks.
I'm also wondering if I could just make up a roman blind out of ordinary fabric, but then spray it with waterproofing??
    Any thoughts, anyone??

    thanks

Would I be right in thinking that a wooden venetian blind would be insulating on the grounds that it is a bit like an old fashioned shutter?

i think the problem with that would be they would very likely warp terribly. all that condensation getting into the wood then it getting cool/cold in the bathroom, i'm honestly not sure how long it would stay the shape it was meant to be, unless it was treated with some sort of weather proofing stain.

wood shutters are excellent for keeping out cold in dry rooms like living rooms and bedrooms though
