Oh Rainy days and Annie - what a lovely response to my meanderings! yes I was a veritable storehouse of old wisdom and strange recipes - I remember once trying to make scented moths ball with cinnamon and gum arabic from a tudor recipe - they were knobbly and unattractively brown but they smelled great for years!!!
Wearing lavender fans for scenting the wardrobe was fun as was digging up and roasting dandelion roots to make pseudo coffee -ghastly and nothing like the stuff you can buy from the wholefood shop and yet I remain convinced I can do it and am determined to try again one day!
Whoever back to reality - plum jam made! More runner beans frozen. Also brought the 3 seater futon up from garden room(its just a very big shed really) - I am convinced that if necessary I could sleep downstairs quite easily if it gets really tough and not bother with heating the upstairs 2 bedrooms. This is an extreme scenario obviously.
Does anybody have a reliable way of drying apple rings?debt free 2021 at current DMP rate[/COLOR] (probably be in an old peoples home by then)0 -
I just picked up 3 lots of the branston beans offer (my DD will take 3 lots of 4 back to Uni with her) but all the 22p pasta had gone-the shelf was so bare I could almost hear crickets! I did pick up some screenwash off the damaged trolley (label dirty) usual price £3 and I got it for £2 so not bad. They also had some good quality antifreeze in tins, reduced from £2.97 to 75p in the car section-I usually buy the trigger sort on principle but I know this stuff is good as it was my ex uses, and he has a fleet of minibuses-it doesn't allow refreezing like I have found with some of the cheaper ones. They also had the huge Regina blitz paper towel bogof. I absolutely love this stuff and have only just got to the last roll from when there was a slightly cheaper bogof offer in wilkies 2 years ago. It's thicker stuff I only use for cleaning -I use microfibre cloths but this paper is really thick and strong. 2 sheets will clean the worst of the muck off a large dirty window,I then follow up with my microfibre cloths, and they are easier to keep clean that way. I also use it on the bathroom floor as it's easier and quicker than getting the mop out! I can highly recommend that stuff.Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!0

Just a thought about the expanded poystyrene on a roll - i can vouch for this stuff, we put it on the ceiling in our old bathroom and then covered it with lining paper, after that we put a patterened blown vinyl over it and painted it and also put lightweight pieces of wood around the edge and painted that too. Result was one very warm very fancy looking ceiling that put the rest of the house to shame. I put the polystyrene up with very thick wallpaper paste and the same with the liningpaper and the blown vinyl, it took a while for each layer to dry out before adding the next and the paint that we used was vinyl silk to give it a finish resistant to the steam. When it needed overpainting a few years down the line we did it with a matt version.
I plan on using the same polyroll on the outside walls of our spare room when we decorate it - the wall actually feels warm to the touch once this is on.

I need to look into that for my wardrobes, Sunnyday-they get very cold and can then get condensation/damp so I am afraid to use one of them in case my clothes get ruined. This is a 1920's bungalow and that side of the house is hit constantly by a prevailing wind. My first ex put polystyrene tiles in them when he built the wardrobes, but after 24 years they are falling off. I need a complete bedroom revamp tbh but have no money for that.Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!0

Does the polystryrene not cause a fire hazzard? i seam to remember a house i rented having to have it removed from all the ceilings because of this?A penny saved is a penny earned.

Suzi you might want to have a look at Thompsons Water Shield it goes on like paint but it is a clear layer of protection which stops water penetrating into your brickwork and walls. It's not cheap, but having said that it is cheaper than having to keep on redecorating thats for sure.
I have put the Homebase link in because it will give you users views on the product!

I seem to think that the versions available now (tiles included) are fire retardent. There should be information on the packaging to check before you buy. Years ago they were a hazard but i`m pretty sure that the old type were banned. I`ve got some old ones on a bedroom ceiling that will be coming off next year - i`ve no idea how old they are
My fleeces that i`ve lined the curtains with say keep away from naked flames on, thankfully my windows are nowhere near the cooker etc
