Oh what I would give to have an open fire again, something so lovely and cozy about when me and my 2 girls and dogs used to snuggle up around an open fire with our hot milk at bed time waiting for the hotwater bottles to warm our beds.
These days I am renting a housing association new build eco house that is toasty but not as cozy as our old granite cottage.Thriftkitten

Thanks Mrs Crafty
Yes absolute light bulb memnt when you described it with the scaffolding boards! Thanks and yes I can see its a two woman job (probably me and 5 ft 11 in daughter) .
The stove idea is great but the old back boiler seems to be a massive complication and I have had quotes any where from £300 to £1400 to take out fie+ boiler and install new stove - admittedly highe one was just a joker but still its not an easy job.
The trouble is the draught it causes - I have to have an air brick and its like the arctic when its cold in some parts of the sitting room plus the rate at which it burns the fuel is horrific - agood 2 scuttlefulls an evening and really I'm not getting the heat cos most of its up the chimney.
Going to save up for boiler removal and cheap stove (probably be drawing my pension by then)
Can you not do this yourself. You sound keen, remember it's only an air outlet, any pics???0 -
Thermal curtain linings / fleece linings / or both?
Ok, so I'm ready to put up my door curtain with thermal linings bought from Dunelm. Do I need fleece's attached aswell? The curtains are rather thin so I'm not sure if the thermal linings will be enough. Any thoughts please............0 -

I made curtains with thermal linings for a wooden (fairly new) set of patio doors. I will be safety pinning some fleeces onto the lining this year as they are the only doors in our house which are not double glazed.0 -
Morning all
I seem to remember reading on here a few weeks ago that a single duvet fits on top of a double mattress as an extra layer of warmth. Does this also make a cheapo mattress much more comfortable?
The reason I ask is I was lucky to get a lovely pine bed frame from freecycle for the spare bedroom, and I'll have friends staying in Oct so need to buy a mattress, but can't afford a decent one. I want my friends to have a warm comfy nights sleep so I'm hoping this will work!0 -
Morning all - I'm sure this question has been asked lots of times, but how is the cheapest but most effective way to block up chimneys? Our gas/elec was a whopping £750 last winter and I am NOT having that again.
It's a drafty Victorian ground floor flat with old windows and fireplaces in every room. We live in rented, so I'm not going to invest lots in winter-proofing, only enough to reduce our bills IYSWIM. Last year I shoved pillows up 2 the fireplaces and did bubble wrap in 1 room, but this winter I clearly need to go whole hog...
Already have a door curtain and will bubble wrap more windows. Curtains are already really thickly lined, but think something draught excluders on the windows might help?? Would an electric radiator in the coldest room be any cheaper than running the central heating?top 2013 wins: iPad, £50 dental care, £50 sportswear, £50 Nectar GC, £300 B&Q GC; jewellery, Bumbo, 12xPringles, 2xDiesel EDT, £25 Morrisons, £50 Loch Fyne
would like to win a holiday, please!!

Hi
We have a single Duvet on top of our double mattress and for us it makes a huge difference - it has made the bed more comfy and warmer too

one duvet won't make a huge difference though it will help, a few duvets and or blankets WILL make a difference. the mattress in my room in this rented flat is shot but it's tolerable with 3 duvets on top, in fact this morning i had a very rare moment of not wanting to get out of bed because i was sooo comfortable!0
