I'm in the same boat [just got a 5kg bag from Lidl £5.49] being all electric and my idea for the rice is to add dryed veg to the rice and cook a vegtable rice like what you can buy in the shop's. hth.
Great idea - I didn't even know you could buy dried veg!:oConfuzzled wrote: »i miss edinburgh for things like that
Me too! There's such a variety if you're prepared to bus-hop around town.
We've nothing like that down here (or even in any of the larger towns within about 20 miles:(). Doubt I'm going to be in Edinburgh again before my op so no chance ....... sigh....
Can anyone recommend any online retailers (where you don't have to buy huge quantities as only me to cater for)?:)Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

Thanks for that. I've ordered a pair, just hoping they fit. (I never trust the measurements clothing companies put online.)
Gigervamp - I've already got an unlined pair, which seems to fit me well and are my usual size so hopefully they will be ok for you. Having realised how cheap they were (normally £55!) I ordered myself some lined ones last night :j0 -
well my door curtains are sorted... sort of.. got some 90x90 lined (i think) for nothing and some freezer stuff a good family friend doesnt want.. gotta pick em up sometime this week.. then gotta attach a wooden baton to each of the walls above the doors to attach the curtain poles to..
not sure if its one pair or 2 she never said.. hmmmSealed pot challenger # 10

Wow, neither of the B & M's I visited had anything reduced so you did well.:) Might even have to break my self imposed ban on them and go to te$co to get more winter car supplies.0 -
Thank you for motivating me to get my winter preparations going.
I bought some of the screenwash at H*lfords yesterday, was going anyway for 2 bicycle bells. Told DH about it and he agreed it would be useful. Chatting to our next door neighbour today he has to take his car to the garage for its MOT, new tyres and new washers because they froze last winter and broke so he too is going to get some of the screenwash.
I have printed some lists for us to work our way through. One is jobs that we need to finish before October half term (my target date) and another for essential household/car stuff to stock up on. I have de-iced the freezer but I am not putting it back on just yet. During October half term I will check all food stocks and stock up on food essentials then, unless there are any bargains to be had.
Good luck everyone and thank you

Evening preppers
All is going well on the prepping front here. I've added some more to my tin/dry store today so that is looking good at the moment.
I had a bit of a brainwave the other day....I can't actually fit curtains over the front and backdoors and although they are double glazed I was concerned I was losing heat. Anyhoo....I've bought two net rods and supporters that stick on. I'm planning on threading fleeces on these to cover the doors. Although the front door one won't be able to stay on all the time it'll be easy to lift on and off when I need to.
Luckily Asda had fleeces on offer £2.77 for a 122cm x 152cm - they were in red, cream and brown. They won't be long enough for the doors so I'm planning on pinning two together.
My next jobs over the coming weeks are:
Put hosepipe back in garage
Get covers for the garden benches
Stock up on medicines
Get my autumn/winter boots re-heeled
Find some deicer - although I will be testing the theory that a spray of vinegar will stop it freezing
Get another plastic mat for the hall way - hmmm.....might nip into the local carpet place and see if they have some cheap off cuts of vinyl I can have - I was going to have vinyl laid but I think it might be too coldAs my dad always used to say 'Just because you've got the money doesn't mean to say you have to spend it all at once'0 -
Kathy - another late "welcome" to you! I'm from the states originally, having grown up a fair number of years in Minnesota (or as locally known there Minne-snow-ta :rotfl:) as well as a few years in (Down East) Maine, by the Canadian border. Having lived within a easy drive's distance from an LL Bean store, I can say that I do miss them. I haven't actually tried to order stuff here in the UK from them though.
DH bought a small camping stove the other day at GoOutdoors. Good price £7.99 and 4 cans of fuel for £6.99 (?), so we were happy with that. We had a couple power outages last year, and this way if there is one, we don't have to worry about cooking for the boys (we have an electric cooker - which I hate! LOL). I always have tons of candles and torches on hand (years of habit!) as well.
We have an open fireplace in the living room, so if we need to use it to provide a bit of heat this winter, we will. DH is planning on getting some coal and wood in, as soon as we arrange to get the chimney swept again.
I'm also putting together my list of things we want to stockpile for the winter. I like being able to just relax at home when there's bad weather, rather than worry that we're going to run out of supplies and fighting everyone else at the supermarket. :cool:MSE mum of DS(7), and DS(4) (and 2 adult DCs as well!)DFW Long haul supporters No 210:snow_grin Christmas 2013 is coming soon!!! :xmastree:0 -
Yep, you're right Grey Queen thinking about it so I MUST make my tomato stash into a mountain:) I know what you mean about prices shooting up. I noticed a couple of Sainsburys basics range things have doubled in price in what seems like overnight:eek:
That's great news:D We had our old gas fire taken out last year, chimney swept and now have an open fire.
Hope no-one minds me posting this pic pre open fire. I know it may not be everyones cup of tea but I love my fireplace:o
Think it looks lovelyIf you found my post helpful, please remember to press the THANKS button! --->0 -
I want that fireplace too... especially the little hens!
Anyone with little people may want to stock up on Karvol - on offer at Mr T's for £2.04 /12 pack until 30/8. I actually use these myself when I have a rotten cold with blocked nose as I find it hard to sleep. I put them on a tissue and put them by my neck so the vapour rises.
