! So, I am thinking about investing in the heat tape for pipes - looks like it will cost me about £60 (unless anyone can point me somewhere cheaper) but it will be well worth it - 5 days with no WM and young kids was NOT funny!!!

I have another pipe outside, only about 10 inches exposed, which needs something doing too but I haven't decided what yet - last year it got wrapped in tinfoil and fleeces with a few bricks over the top - didn't work well so need ideas on that pretty please :)

I grew up on a farm without gas supply so the cooker had bottled gas which was kept outside. My dad plaited some hay and wrapped it around the exposed pipe, this had the advantage of being like a rope and moulded well around the pipe.

Maybe if you have a farmer near you, you may be able to try this.

I have worn the same pair of really comfortable hiking boots for the last 10 years/winters and sadly they have cracked along the soles and now my feet get wet

So, after reading the comments about Muckboots, I have looked on-line and found a pair (with good reviews) in my size, for £24.99 :j

They are free delivery too so unless we get a sudden downpour in the next 3-5 days, I will be a happy bunny!

Thankyou to all the people who suggested them.... that's something else crossed off my "to-do" list!

I visited Poundland today & bout 4 pairs of thermal socks for £2. If they're not that warm they'll do anyhow cos I needed new ones. Also got some batteries, & 2.5L of ready mixed screenwash for £1 (obviously!)

for anyone looking to buy leggings/thermal longjohns, Asda do great thick thermal tights for £3. They come in black and dark grey, and are so much warmer than leggings. I always find that leggings just take the chill off, whereas these actually keep you warm! I work outside a lot and they are great under trousers.
Just noticed today that the £3 ones are 100 denier, but they also have 300 denier ones for £4. Only had them in black in my store though, so not sure if they also come in grey or not.

My winter prep is going ok, got some more storecupboard stuff today- will update with a full "to do/have done" list when I can be bothered :D

Mountain warehouse do some cheap ski jackets http://www.mountainwarehouse.com/kids/clothing/ski-jackets/?n=20&s=price-up not sure if this is what you're looking for though.

Thanks for that link. I've just spent £62 on 3 ski jackets (for me and two kids and some ski gloves for me). OK it's a lot for one outlay but am hoping it will be worth it in the long run.
