Preparing for winter II

for anyone looking to buy leggings/thermal longjohns, Asda do great thick thermal tights for £3. They come in black and dark grey, and are so much warmer than leggings. I always find that leggings just take the chill off, whereas these actually keep you warm! I work outside a lot and they are great under trousers.
Thanks for reminding me about that. Asda didn't have any in on the occasions when I looked during the winter, so I've just picked up a couple of pairs while doing the Monday shop. We'll all be as snug as bugs in rugs on hereFreddie Starr Ate My Signature

Here is now another updated winter 2011/12 weather report forecasting much of what others are now saying! It makes grim reading!

That`s harrowing to be truthful. I live in the far northwest of Scotland and last winter saw temps regularly in the minus twenties. It was unbelievably cold.
With no central heating, I`m dreading this coming winter."Ignore the eejits...it saves your blood pressure and drives `em nuts!"0 -

I am keeping my eye on all of them, some are saying this bad weather could be the end of November others are saying the middle of December with it holding in place until well into January.
I kind of take the point that we are in for a spell of cold winters, but also take the longer view that we struggle to predict what is happening next week as well. I also have to give credence to Exactaweather who originally predicted back in 2009 - correctly - that we were in for a run of cold winters, which we have been.
To be honest, I am preparing for the worst, if it does turn out to be a fair to middling winter then we are at least still prepared and those jobs such as getting the guttering cleared out, the shed, gates, arbour and bird table stained and protected are all good things to be done. We have stocked up for our horses as well which is massively important for them. The thing is this, that rain can do just as much damage as snow and cold. It can rot woodwork and cause decay to come on much quicker and rain is just as unforgiving as snow at times. Either way my thoughts are that it is going to be cold regardless and even if we have a mere smattering of snow for a couple of days it is better to be prepared than not having to run around just to get things in. The soup and tinned stuff will be used anyway regardless.
However, if it does turn out to be a terrible winter like they are suggesting, then either way we will all still have had much preparation put in which has been worth it for all of us. Those flannelette sheets won't have been a mad buy after all and Alice-Mary will feel virtous that knitting in this hot weather spell will at least have been worth itCat, Dogs and the Horses are our fag and beer money:beer:

I bought an old Valor paraffin heater for the kitchen for this winter, and will be stocking up paraffin, so if anyone has any tips on safely storing it, greatly appreciated.
We get lots of power cuts here each winter, so I also got a couple of paraffin lamps, and would have bought candles but wow! they`re expensive, or am I just being mean?"Ignore the eejits...it saves your blood pressure and drives `em nuts!"0 -
This thread really helped me last year and I was much better prepared than I would have been in the past. Thank you everyone
I have decided its time to revisit and begin my winter preparations. I have been saving for a new heating system since I bought my house in 2002 and have finally had it fitted a couple of weeks ago. I am hoping this will make a huge difference. In the awful Scottish winter last year, I struggled to get the house above 15c. I also have someone coiming to fill the cavity walls tomorrow.
I have started my winter list and ticked off the first item by ordering a proper snow shovel. I noticed how much better one of my neighbours got on with a large plastic shovel. I have found one on ebay. My next jobs are to replace my leaking thermos and get down to the local outlet stores to find flannelette sheets. I haven't used them since childhood, but do remember they were very cosy.0 -
Is there a winter tick list anywhere on the forum?0

I'm not reading this thread anymore - just put £15 bet on a white Christmas. Must be mad! Mind you, won't miss it too much at the moment but will really appreciate the £135 in January if it does snow. Being a MS site, I don't recommend this madness to anyone. Please do not quote spam as this enables it to 'live on' once the spam post is removed.

Popped into B&M and managed to pick up their version of a JML magic carpet for the hall. Was only £2.99 so im hoping that it works well. If it does ill pick up another one for the back door (cat traipsing in dirt all the time!!)
Spotted some Hunter wellies at a decent price so i'll invest in a pair of those i think.
Going shopping in Glasgow (and I'm stupidly excited - massive Primark anyone??) so hopefully i'll spot some winter bargains!0
