Today was the first time I felt cold when having a shower. I can put throws/blankets on me when sitting or sleeping but not alot else I can do when showering! Gonna have to put the heating on next time!!

i had that problem in my flat last winter. the water was hot but the room wasn't warm enough to keep me a decent temp. fortunately my bathroom has one of those exorbitantly expensive heaters up near the ceiling. pricey yes but i found that if i just put it on for about 5 minutes before a shower it took the worst of the chill off the air.

i also decided last winter that i didn't need to shower each day, a quick wash in the bathroom sink was ok, i only showered when i really needed it so in the long run i probably saved money as i wasn't heating as much water as i was before with the power shower ;)

    Hi,
Really chilly this morning. My heating clicked on by itself at 12 so will let it do its stuff and warm the house.

We brought our guinea piggies in last night to their indoor cage (much to my westie dogs disgust!) so definitely getting colder. They can go back out again during the day.

I dyed my flannelette sheets red to match my winter bedding set and that was very successful so looking forward to putting those on soon. I also had my hair dyed red too so feel like i have a much warmer colouring too!! Very autumnal colours my kids dad commented!

Im pondering on finding something suitable for my patio doors in my bedroom. Mad design but let in loads of cold. I need to still open them as they are only form of ventilation bar the tiniest window  Any thoughts would be very much appreciated.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

I'm hitting and running but just wanted to say that i have ordered some thermal 'lady janes' this evening, haven't ordered the tops yet, they will have to wait for another week. It felt quite chilly in the house today and the veg growing in the garden is all starting to wind down and many of my toms are still green...will make green tom chutney or something if they don't start going red in the next couple of weeks...a couple of my courgette plants have finished producing and there is just one left that i will leave for a week or two. I ordered my shallots, onions and garlic a couple of days ago, so they will likely be planted next month ready for overwintering. Still have the heating off, but the evenings are getting colder in the house. Trying to manage a while longer before heating the house though. Have a good weekend everyone!
Hi katholicos, green tomato chutney sounds lovely, but if you want to ripen tomatoes you can do it indoors. I heard you can put them in a paper bag with bananas as they give upf ethylene gas that helps them ripen. There's a wee bit about ripening tomatoes here:

Edit: I haven't tried it .... I didn't grow any and am having tomato envy!
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

It is so cold here at the moment that I am starting to think that I will have to bring the prep for winter forward really quickly. I have managed to scrape together some funds and am just trying to decide which things to prioritise!

  • just managed to catch up with the thread again. Someone asked baout where to get door curtains, I got 2 off Amazon last year, thermal door curtains for £17 each, and one from dunhelm mill a little more expensive i think £22, also if you search ebay their is usually a lot on there this time of year.

i also know additions direct had them in last year but were sold out in December so may be worth a look there and in the little woods catelogue too if no luck on amazon

here's a link to my thermal door curtain search on amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_20?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=thermal+door+curtain&sprefix=thermal+door+curtain

    hope this helps :)

i just get an old heavy curtains, and adapt it to the size of my front door. Your can pick up them up cheaply in charity shops and carboot sales.. I find the old velvet/velveteen ones brilliant for this, and they are normally lined too:D
