  • Thanks for all the comments about the shutters. Bluebag - yes, they are like 'doors' - solid wooden shutters rather than slatted things.
The house is Victorian rather than Georgian :)
Hopefully they will be OK - the sash windows all operate properly and fit properly so far as I can see - once we've moved in, I'll need to do a proper draught check.
I think I'll just budget money for curtains and poles & keep it to one side & see how we get on :)

OOOOh, deffo going to try the mulled wine it sounds lovely and festive, Thanks for recipes :D

Got the council in to do my front door, they put a new weather bar along the bottom aswell as a piece of rubber to make it more firm and then ontop of the rubber the put draught foam tape to seal any gaps. Pleased with that as it means one less job for me. Also waiting to hear back from British gas on checking our insulation, if its not upto standard they are going to give me free cavity wall and free loft insulation.

Other then that things have been very quiet preperation wish, i did manage to pick up more tissues as we go through loads in winter. Pack of ten for 55p in homebargains so thought may aswell. Still debating on buying the foil camping blankets from poundland as raidiator panels , you get 2 for a £1 and they would be great to deflect the heat back into the room rather then into the wall. Would they be safe to use and can you feel the room is warmer doing the foil panel thing?

    Morning all

Well looks like I have a day in the house today as Benjamin woke up at 4am, came into our room and then threw up everywhere - so I've cleaned the best I can and now he is asleep on the sofa, holly is laying on the floor drinking her juice bottle and I shall be looking for things to try and do today around playing nurse.

Although Owen has been getting grief in work from my mother and her 'boss' so he emailed his area manager last night and made a complaint. That was 3pm yesterday - at 5pm he had a phone call not to go into work as there 'is no work for him'. Bit strange dont you think? Although if Owen had brought his phone in from the car last night, he would of known that he didnt have to get up at 6am today so now hes sat on the sofa,:mad::mad: and playing angry birds on my iPhone!

So maybe its even better that Im slightly more ahead with winter preperations!:eek::eek:
    Time to find me again

I am very envious of the shutters, I just love them. We used to shut them up and pull the curtains across in the winter. All round a coal fire and very cozy.

Seemed to shut the cares of the world out somehow.:)
  • Thanks to you guys,, I've poked my nose around Sports Direst and today my new boots arrived. Originally £60 got them for £15, which I'm pleased about. So at last I've a pair or winter boots lined with shearling. I really wish you could still get the fleece line crepe soled boots with a zip up the front that old ladies wore during the winter. They look very military and lace up, but will cope if my ankles get swollen. But with my russian hat, well let's say it's fortunate I've got a good sense of humour.

Rumour has it, you can still get great coats with button in lining in army surplus shops. I used to wear one in the 60s. I'm tempted... sorely tempted. I hate getting cold in winter and coats sold recently, just haven't kept me warm when it's really cold.

Any suggestions? I must have a full length coat the covers my knees.

Well I've made a very, very slow start. Yesterday I bought two hot water bottles! I'm going to buy a couple more next month too. I hope next winter will be the last one in this very draughty house. Unfortunately my MIL died last week of pancreatic cancer, but as my DH is the only child he's inheriting everything, and there should be enough money, once it's converted from Rands, to buy a house.

Just popping in for a moment :)

I was in Focus in Gainsborough today and all of their insulation had 60% off the marked price. About 10 rolls of insulation, lots of cling film double glazing and the strips you put around the windows and doors on the shelves. This store will become a B&Q and so seems to be one that will stay open the longest, so will probably have more deliveries before they finally close.
