Preparing for winter II

I had some lovely black suede mittens as a kid....
I may be a bit odd, but I'm loving these cold snowy winters:o. I realize they are not good for many people such as the elderly, but there is something quite 'old style' about going out and walking through the snow and ice and coming back to homemade stews, soups and homemade winter/Xmas decorations....and also being prepared for snow means you can enjoy it more when it comes0 -
I think a whole generation of mums spent their entire waking hours saying "you'll get chilblains"... mine did but I've never had one yet
I wonder what happened to them? Did they go out of fashion? :rotfl:0 -

My brother and I would get the 'you'll get chillblains' off Mum when we'd put our soggy sock-ed feet against the Rayburn after a day of jumping into snow filled ditches.
Funnily enough, I never 'got piles' from sitting on cold stone walls either!!! :rotfl:0 -
Haha...so it wasnt just my mum that came out with all that!! In response to mittens I have a lovely sheepskin pair and I also have my sheepskin hat "with ears". The latter came off ebay and the former came from the market but celtic sheepskin do both - but they dont come cheap from there.0

Thanks everyone I think I'll look for some mittens that will fit into my pockets. I seem to remember that the sheepskin ones were bulky and had to be carried when your hands got hot! Some people are never suited are they?:o:pThe beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

Please and Thank You are the magic words;)0 -

I'd personally get sheepshkin ones and safty pin or sew them on to a ribbon or long piece of elastic for true to childhood experience and reduced likely hood of losing them. Then I'd wear gloves underneath the super warm mittens!0 -
I just used my oven gloves with fingers, to sort my freezer. I bet they would be excellent in the snow0

Have a look at the netweather forum. Wow, I didn`t know a fraction of what those nerdy types know re the weather. Some of them get very upset at not breaking various records re freezing temperatures. I get the impression that we all going to see some incredibly bad weather over the next few days0

Yes, I've been following the netweather forums and also a weather forum on boards.ie as I have family in Ireland.
They are saying its being played down in the media and giving mixed messages. Netweather has regional threads so I'm following those to see what the experts are saying.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0 -
I'm not sure if this would work or not but...............
Regarding going on a car journey and being prepared, I had the idea of filling hot water bottles and putting them in one of those Thermos bags, the ones that are silver lined.
That way they should stay warm for a few hours ready to use if needed.0
