Landladys plumber is coming to look at my boiler tomorrow. He won't touch it if its broken & needs a part, but if its just a case of repressuring it then he might be able to do it for me. :j I'm hoping he can make sense of the user/installation guide and fix it for me. Everything I can do to it I've done but still no joy.

. oddly enough the small birds don't seem to be eating any. they also aren't eating the seed in the feeder which is hanging up so away from the bigger birds, i'm rather confused as to why this is though i'm happy to feed any birds this time of year, they all need it and i quite like crows and terns so at least some of them are well fed!

Many small birds such as sparrows and chaffinches are really ground feeders and don't feel comfortable trying to eat from hanging feeders.
Also the position of the food is sometimes important. We try and put our ground feeding tray which contains mixed seeds and oats at the base of a shrub as some birds like the protection of somewhere safe to flee to in case of attack from bigger birds. We also sprinkle fatty oats around the base of shubs and once the birds know where to find it, they come back pretty regularly. If you're newly feeding, it does take a while before they realise they've found a regular reliable feeding station, but once they do, they'll be back time and time again, especially in bad weather.

I agree with your post, when we first moved it we didnt see a bird for months, yet we are in the country, but once they did come they are here from early morn to dusk and we have allsorts, I do have a lot of different foods out, and I have to refill the feeders twice a wekk and they are the 18 inch long ones.......birds cost more than we do to feed....

Yes, same in our house but they've come to rely on us now, especially in this cold weather. They're all starting to fly in and hover on the nearby trees before it's barely daylight because they're so hungry. Don't really begrude the money as they give us such pleasure watching them and any energy they use up uselessly flying around without finding food makes them even more vulnerable to exhaustion and dying.

I put this on the tough thread. Its important

****** according to rain today premium: the next lot of precipitation coming over (and its fast moving and seems to last an hour or so) is rain which is going to turn to ice as soon as it hits the ground. It is coming from the west and will start to hit land at around 3.30 pm so don`t dither re getting home from picking children up. Cardiff at 5 ish and bristol at 5.30 so moving quickly towards the east

Frozen rain is no joke. I got caught in it once and it is really frightening. Much worse than snow

    .

Well we haven't had any in North Staffordshire but we do have plenty of snow coming down at the minute (8.25pm).
  • I also feed the birds every day, putting out a variety of feed and water, and don't begrudge the money I spend. It's such a pleasure to watch them feeding.
I would be most upset,if for any reason,I were unable to continue feeding them.I don't have a garden, but leave food on the balcony. There is often a lot of 'mess' left, also on the two flats below me.My neighbours don't seem to mind.I've told them that I'd quite happily clean up the mess for them;they just need to say. It's only happened once.

I'm really glad I did my winter preps before the snow arrived last weekend

I had my snow shovel which was a godsend and easier to use
I had enough food to keep me going without dashing to the shops
I had enough warm clothing/walking gear to keep me warm outside

The only thing I put off again and again was my new car tyres - meaning when I drove this week after one lot of snow I scared myself driving as I could feel the lack of grip. After a little mix up at the garage I have 2 new tyres (need 3) and as soon as I drove I could feel the difference. The car felt grippy and solid again.

Meaning I will get the 3rd one fitted tomorrow when it arrives and ask how long the only one not changed has left. The spare is ok as one of the car tyres (which was ok) has been shuffled on to it

Have felt warm and cosy with the radiator reflectors working very well and the newly freed up space in front of the radiator making all the difference in the living room for warmth.

Ok, maybe I overstocked on pasta and stock cubes but hey, if winter has arrived well and truly now at least I don't have to join the scrums in the shops if I don't want to and they'll last

The petrol station was a bit busier than normal today when I filled up - then heard all the news stories about panic buying of food and fuel which might have accounted for how busy the massive supermarket next to work was all day!

    :j:j:j I've got heating again :j:j:j

Knew I married him for a reason :D

The barrings in the extractor fan has had it basically. Disassembled it ,cleaned it up, bit of wd40 and its working again.
He's going to buy it a new one anyway...(£120  looked online) as it will happen again.

    He's in the wrong job.

Nikki...you can check the pressure yourself, should have a gauge on the boiler to show you. Less than 1 is low and the taps need opening.

Pressure always drops after radiators are bleed, have you done that recently?

In door temp went down to 8c, up to 10c already.:T

The pressure has dropped but I have 6(maybe more) different taps on the underneath of the boiler so no idea which one needs to be turned and the instruction booklet is extremely confusing to me :o

I haven't bled the radiators because its a fairly new system and the fellas did that when they fitted it. I'm just hoping my landladys plumber can make sense of the booklet and maybe work out whats happened and how to fix it. :(

That's a lot of taps, must include isolators too.

I hope its something simple that he can fix tomorrow for you.
