Preparing for winter II

Kitchenbunny wrote: »Hi all, been lurking but thought I'd pop on to say that I've been stocking up on tealights and other candles, and my sister has been knitting hot water bottle covers ready for winter. I also wanted to share that if anyone is looking to get their winter coat dry-cleaned before the weather turns really cold Johnson's Dry Cleaners are doing an offer of a coat for £8. I've seen the offer in their window and will be going to get mine cleaned this week so I'll let you know how it goes. Normally it is a lot more expensive than that. I have a lovely cream coat that does tend to pick up dust from rain and traffic silt so it is nice to get it clean.

My mum buys a self cleaning kit from lakeland, its a bag and some cloths that you put in the tumble dryer, she swears by it although I have never personally tried it. (I don't buy it if it won't go in the washer.)
She says it has saved her a small fortune as she only wears wool jumpers and skirts.
Hope you find of some help.0 -
Thanks for all the advice folks - made foil wotsit for behind living room radiator today - cost errrm about £1.50 in total. Free cardboard from corner shop, free bubble wrap from neighbour, had to pay for foil and double sided tape/pads. It was like Blue Peter all over again
Now stuck on - yaaaaay - sadly had to put heating on this afternoon, as flippin freezin here, forecast 1* tonight - even with all my layers I'm not daft enough to make meself ill.
Wasn't happy tho, coz lasted out til 10th Nov last year. When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on

When my DS was younger we spent xmas eve watching santa on noradsanta, it follows him around the world through different time zones bit of knowledge along the way if you have kids try it.
Yeah we do that too. A window is kept open on the pc just to check where he has got to. Its a good way to get little ones off to bed cos they know he isn't far off! lol
:xmassmile I love Christmas!!!:xmastree:Donna
Economy; careful management; providence. Whether you call it thrifty or frugality it all comes down to getting more for your money.0 -
I am loving this thread!!! I absolutely adore winter - by far the best season in my opinion! I know it's tough because it's cold etc, but I love the challenge of it all. And you can do all your planning for the fun things to do in the warmer months!! Christmas is too exciting though - Diddly, I don't have kids but I think I might do a hamper for me and OH!!!!! Bonfire Night is the next exciting one for me though!!!0

Fleece blankets.
I need some fleece blankets in either white or cream to line a double door curtain. I have only seen mention of, and can only find, coloured ones.
I would really appreciate anyone letting me know f they have seen double size in white or cream.0 -

The norad Santa, I enjoyed sending the link to my son in NZ last year and telling him to get to bed before Santa arrived. (He's 30!)
We always had new jamis for Christmas eve. (Helps the settling down bit for excited kids) and we always burn a candle all day on Christmas day for absent friends. Keeps them in our memories and feels like we are sharing the day with them. I wonder what other traditions you all have? OK, sorry it's a little off thread but we don't really mind do we?The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

So is it just me who hates Christmas? We only bother with it because of the children, otherwise it would be just another day.
Bah humbug!:rotfl: {slinks away with a Scrooge-like scowl :rotfl:}0 -
Asda had cream fleeces last week, they were in the 2 for £3 offer.
We also track Santa all day on Christmas eve and do the message from santa online when they break up from school too. Littlies love it, and it amuses the eldest two too,0
