Hi, I've been lurking for a while on the old thread and picked up some really handy tips, so thought I'd best be brave and say hello:)
I've not done too much for preparing yet, although we've just finished putting a wood burner in, instead of an open fire, already I can tell a big difference. We haven't had the heating on yet :j
I've bought new hot water bottles and put foil behind the radiators so far.....but i'm thinking of plenty more things to do thanks to this thread :T0 -
Clearly its just me that's found her plastic milk bottles with the lid popped off then when freezing milk LOL!I have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you it'll be with a knife

I know that a lot of people use candles in the colder weather.
I save the ends of my candles during the year, they can be quite substantial on some candles, then I melt them (using other old candles placed under an oven grid) into small baked bean and tuna tins and put several wicks into them ( you can buy candles wicks cheaply online). I then put these into pretty containers or a terracotta pot and burn them. They give off a surprising amount of heat and can really help to keep the chill off a room as well a looking cheerful, which is warming in itself.
Obviously just put them where pets and kids can't get at them, and always heat up the wax v gently and slowly - the above method does this, or you can put the tins in a pan of water on the stove at a very low heat.

Re freezing milk. Thanks so much for all of the replies. I live alone and don't actually use a huge amount of milk, hence the ice bag query. Think I will do that at the week end and that will be another job off the listA smile costs little but creates much0

DS has bought a motorbike to work on through the winter. The garage doors have gaps all around - I can make a "sausage" to go along the bottom, but what about the sides? Can you get "brushes" as in letterboxes to prevent draughts?
you can get several things
you can get a foam strip type thing on a roll, thats self adhesive
and you can get the same but it has a plastic coating and a little lip on it
(PLEASE someone more technical than me say what its called)
the only brush type affair i can think of is like the ones on the bottoms of doors0 -
You could blow a few Clubcard points and treat yourself to a magazine subscription - something to settle down and read with a cup of tea. Always feels very decadent to me!Hope is not a strategy.0

Have just thought rereading the above - could put the silver thing I put in the car windscreen in summer to keep it cool behind a radiator. Instant radiator reflector and somewhere to store it! (These could well be cheap somewhere at this time of the year as well....)Hope is not a strategy.0
