I'm also looking to stop smoking. Although I enjoy it (most of the time!) I just can't justify the cost of it. I used to smoke 20 a day and cut down now to about 10 but that's still around £5 every other day which is crazy!

I went on holiday in September and brought back 1000 cigarettes which ran out at the start of December and after not having to buy any for so long I'm now noticing the cost even more so.

Good luck to everyone who has quit already, wish me luck!!

    Hi all,

Well TimBear you are halfway to giving up once you start thinking that you want to quit. I quit in 2000 for 4 years, started again and was on and off the cigarettes until early September. I always remember several points when I'm tempted to go back:

    1. The slight pain in the left hand side of my chest whenever I smoked (bonus to you if you haven't experienced that yet!)
    2. The almost £200 per month of cash going up in smoke (I now pay this into a stocks and shares ISA!)
    3. Related to point 2 - I have reduced my tax bill - I don't want to give the government anymore than I need to!
    4. The guilt and dissapointment I used to feel with myself whenever I started smoking again.

The NHS do a hand quit smoking pack, which includes a wheel thingy that points our how much over a selectable number of years it costs to smoke, 10, 20 etc. per day. That is quite inspiring.

  • Well done! Its looking good.

I gave up smoking and have not looked back. I used a product called smart cigarettes. They are great and work out very cheap compared to normal cigarettes. They are from a U.K based company with great customer service and quick delivery time too. Had mine the next day after ordering. It comes in a kit with all you need. Its basicly a substitute cigarette that helps you wean off cigarettes at your own pace. It looks, feels and even smokes like a real cigarette but its just vapor and doesn't stink! Just google smart cigarettes or visit smartcigarettes.co.uk i cant recommend them enough!

I gave up smoking last feb 14th as a Valentine present to myself & found the quit smoking thread on here invaluable especially when I felt a few wobbles to start with.

I really never thought I would manage it as I'd smoked for 32 years & was a heavy smoker & enjoyed it too. I insisted on getting a cessation worker on the NHS & it was a bit of a battle as there wasn't one in this area but got there & that definately helped me too - use everything you can. It's one of the best pressies I gave myself. I do not know how I afforded it as already I've saved nearly £3,000 - not that I've put it away as I've been really hard up but it has gone on other essential things.

It is easier than you think to stop & just don't ever think you can only have the one. Just never weaken & you'll be fine. If you download the silkquit thing it calculates how much you've saved both in money & life - a good incentive.

All the best to anyone quitting.

well done to all you who have stopped I keep stopping and starting need to be stronger.Stopped again on wednesday and bought a pack today I'm annoyed at myself but I will do it.
  • I stopped about 6 months ago, love the smell still, but don't actually feel any need for them, unless I've had one too many glaases of wino! but have resisted so far. MManagaed to get OH to try to give up on New Years Day, he's on day 10 without a fag, and he was a 20+ a day smoker, I'm so proud of him, still early days and he's incredibly grouchy, but I just keep reminded him of what we not spending on fagsx and how much our health will be and I'm sure we'll be non-smokers this time next year :)
Just bumbling along, trying to save some money
Couldn't do it without coming here every day ;)
