You should all read Hugh Fearnley-Whitingstall's meat book. It is enough to turn you vegetarian when you find out what supermarkets do to your meat! I just buy from the butchers now after reading it!
  • i didn't want to mention Waitrose for fear of being shouted down about cost or something but their meat is the best value. When I say that I mean that I never have to worry about it. It's good quality and yummy - there's rarely any waste.
And often the same price as everywhere else anyway.

Report it to tesco, maybe 1 of they're fridges isnt working correctly and not chilling the food to the right temp.

It does happen as ive seen it myself, the fridges are meant to be checked(well in sainsburys they are so i guess tesco is the same) regulary to make sure they are at the right temp

Most Tescos do not check the temps of freezers and fridges, it is all done electronically now with a phone call to the store if they break down. That is unless the system is down like it has been for the past couple of weeks :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::T:T:T:T:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::beer::beer:

A Sainsburys butchery manager once admitted to me that he 'recycled' meat.

A piece of beef that was at the end of its shelf life would be reused as mince and have a whole new shelf life put on it. I pointed out to him that this was very risky, but he said that they were gambling on the fact that mince was a fast moving line and would probably be out the store before it went right off.

He said it was the only way he could meet the harsh targets imposed by head office (he didn't mention his bonus though).

Althugh we didn't have a lot of money when I was young, my mother always bought rump steak and had it minced at the butcher's shop, The mincer was put where the customers could see it so you were sure you were buying pure beef. Time to go back to the butchers for all meat and poultry products?

I am talking about a few years back here but I know someone who worked on the line at a meat factory and they labelled M&S, Waitrose, Tesco etc. and all seemed to be on the same line. What I am saying is that the supermarket will not necessarily give you assurance that it is a different quality of meat from a different farm.

A beast is bled when it is killed so "bloody meat" is not necessarily a sign of "good" meat.

I also agree that some meat will have a smell about it, I ate chicken last night which I had thawed from the freezer and it certainly had a taint to it but it wasnt an offensive smell so I cooked it and ate it and here I am feeling as fit as a butchers dog!

Cheers for the response to my bloody=fresh comment.

So, like, how come Morrisons meat is oozing with blood (or dye) and Tescos is dry as a bone ? Is that just a ploy for gullible fools like me ?

  • this is what i dont understand about this country - we Should rear or own meat - they do it in OZ an NZ and then ahve a bloke come round and kill it and cut it and you have a freezer full of good meat.

Off putting they call themselves home kill mind. :D
