Changes to Housing benefit how much will rents fall?

Interesting to hear Ian Duncan Smith on the Andrew Marr show this morning. Some very robust phrases used like 'driving down housing costs' and 'the days of housing benefit being a blank cheque for landlords are over'. Make no mistake, this years cuts to hb and smi are the first of many more cuts to the support for rents and house prices. This government have one intention when it comes to housing costs and it's pretty much the opposite to that of Gordon Brown.0

Do you think that this government may actually try to do something to reduce housing costs?0

"Because we are 40% of the rental market, we drove all the rents up in places like London.
"So that if you are a working person, on low or marginal income, you can't afford to live in central London, you have to be on benefits or incredibly wealthy."
He said his message to private landlords was "the game is over, these rents are coming down".
IDS quoted 40% himself on the show, but he didn't say 40% of London, or 40% overall..
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-11752421It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?0 -

Tbh I don't really think the percentage is the point, it's the sentiment and tone of IDS's message that says that housing costs are too high and have to come down. This government clearly believes that costs need to be cut to meet what can be afforded as opposed to increasing debt to make up the difference between what can be afforded and the cost. Housing costs will fall to what can be afforded.0 -
Do you know what percentage of private renting is LHA.
http://www.statistics.gov.uk/downloa..._tabs_0809.xls
Table 30 gives 25,874,000 households in UK in 2008/09
Table 31 gives 13% of those as private rental (3,363,620)
http://research.dwp.gov.uk/asd/asd1/...ease_jul10.xls
Table 3 gives 1,448,700 households claiming LHA in April 2010
So 43% in private rental in UK get get some or all of their rent paid through LHA. Can't find figures for how many of these are in work.Murphy was an optimist!!!0
