The government's proposed changes to the housing benefit system will lead to "Kosovo-style" cleansing in the capital, according to the London mayor, Boris Johnson.

How many families will be moving out of London is a matter of opinion. Time will tell.

It is clear though that many people will have to move out of London meaning less demand and more supply.
  • I doubt that it really will mean families who are claiming LHA/HB shall have to leave London completely: they'll just have to move out of the expensive central parts like Westminster and Kensington & Chelsea. The Kosovo-style cleansing will only affect those living in the expesive parts of central London, I expect. There are plenty of boroughs within Zones 2 and 3 which are far cheaper than bits of Middlesex and Hertfordshire. Like where I live, for instance. I pity those who have children as the schools round here are absolute carp

Pretty offensive choice of words there BnT.

During the conflict, roughly a million ethnic Albanians fled or were forcefully driven from Kosovo. Altogether, more than 11,000 deaths have been reported to Carla Del Ponte by her prosecutors. Some 3,000 people are still missing, of which 2,500 are Albanian, 400 Serbs and 100 Roma. Ultimately by June Milošević had agreed to a foreign military presence within Kosovo and withdrawal of his troops.

I wasn't the first person on this thread to use that phrase, although I neglected to put it in inverted commas as RDB had.

Our illustrious mayor, the alleged buffoon Boris Johnson first used it in precisely this context, but seeing as you're in Ozland I wouldn't expect you to have known that, however you could have inferred same by reading RDS's post a bit more closely even if you didn't read the link s/he helpfully provided. If you find the phrase offensive I suggest you take it up with dear Boris but I think you'll find that he's rather busy deflecting similar enquiries from elsewhere.

As BnT says, it's been said by Mayor Boris - and he got much flak for it. It does rather denigrate the suffering experienced by the Kosovans to compare the pogrom that occurred there with the Tory proposals.

I am quite worried, actually. I find myself agreeing with this particular Tory policy, as I think there should be a limit on how much public subsidy someone can get when there are cheaper alternatives.

Can I really be getting that old that I agree with the Tories, or is it just this one policy? I had a look in the mirror and I am pretty grey (the bits that aren't bald).
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
  • Not many will move away from London. Rents and house prices will still go up.

"A man who is not a liberal when he is 16 has no heart. A man who is not a conservative when he is 60 has no head."
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

    Er what are you blind?

    You base this on what?

Fact is demand for rental properties in London will go down and supply will go up.

What I am getting at is that there seems to be an assumption that a family needs £200 to £250 a week to live on after paying rent and council tax where does that figure come from.

An average family in London with a could of kids can get about £250 a week child and working tax credit and child benefit.

If they need more than £250 a week for rent then they will be losing some of their other benefits.

Most will decide to move away from Lon and rent somewhere less than £250 a week.

Are you in that position? If not how do you know. We will have to see what happens when the £500 cap comes in but I don’t think it as clear cut as some people think.
