Another vote for the Blistex Relief Cream, at least to begin with until your lips have healed. It worked wonders on my lips when they were very dry and chapped through a nasty sunburn. I also like the plain Nivea sticks for everyday. Another poster was right when they say your skin can become dependant on petroleum jelly products so they might make it worse in the long run, but usually Vaseline gives alright results.
Do you think you lick your lips a lot? That can make them very dry. Don't use lip balms that are coloured or flavoured, as these ingredients can actually be drying and if it tastes nice you will just be constantly licking it off!
Try this when your lips are flaky and chapped:
Apply lashings of your preferred lip balm.
Take a warm damp flannel/bit of a towel, or an old toothbrush, and gently rub in circles over your lips to exfoliate.
Apply further lashings of lip balm.
It's good to do this before bed so the lip balm can have a long while to sink in, without you licking it/eating/drinking/etc.0 -
Carmex works for me. the cherry flavour one is very nice.0

Sorry haven't read all posts so sorry if this has been said-
Blistex Relief till it's healed then mornings use an intensive moisturiser and then vaseline (or 8 hour cream which is basically nicer vaseline!) to keep the moisture in. Other lip products just gets sucked up by my skin!
Drink tons of water because as much as I'm a toiletry fiend if the moisture isn't in there in the first place you'll always have dry lips. I drink tons of water and although my lips are still dry they are better.
Good luckSince starting again after beanie: June 2016: Child development DVDs, Massive Attack tickets. July: Aberystwyth trip, hotmilk nightie. Aug: £10 Hipp Organic vouchers, powerpack. September: Sunglasses. October: £30 poundland vouchers.0 -
Simple do a lip moisturiser which is easily the best I've ever tried - definitely better than vaseline, EA lip balm, and even blistex/carmex in my opinion (well, for me anyway
) - it was an absolute lifesaver on my lips.
Simple Kind to Lips Intensive Lip Moisturiser
You should be able to get it in your local boots or superdrug.
I had this (luckily I got a freebie). After intially thinking "this is nice", it dried my lips out dreadfully and left them red and sore:( (I do seem to have a problem with Simple products).
Pure Shea butter works for me (and the children). It's great for so many things (there was a thread running 2-3 months ago) and now I always make sure I've got some in the house.0 -
Just to add: Like skin, drinking water wont help that much. It helps to about 20% but dry lips (or skin) is not due to dehydration in most cases. Its more likely to be either environmental or down to hormonal stress (brought on by just about everything from medication through to stress and fatigue).
You could try drinking like a fish but I doubt you will see any difference.
(For an example, if you need one, I have very dry skin, so dry that it flakes if I don't exfoliate and is tight and itchy within minutes if I use moisturisers for normal skin. I drink alot of water, anything from 3L a day to 5L a day. I also go to the gym alot, travel alot on public transport and am constantly in and out of buildings. I also shower every day in hot water- these things dry out my skin and as over hydrated as I am, it doesn't and wont make a bit of difference to my skin, my skin is dry because of what I put it through, what my diet lacks (oils) and stress which probably affects my hormones.)
Drinking water wont help very much I'm afraid.0 -
Blistex Relief Cream. Used to be Blisteze. It does say its for cold sores/cracked lips but its the only thing I've found that can repair my lips once they've become so dry. Its about £2 for a tube but u need such a tiny amount it lasts for ages. I use it all winter and wouldn't use anything else
This was what I was going to recommend as well - absolutely brilliant stuff. If you use it throughout the day by the second day they feel so much better, also before you go to bed put a good layer on. I've found nothing better for really dry, cracked, sore lips.
If they are not so bad, I really like as well Burts Bees lip balms both the ones that come in the little tins and the stick ones (the pomegranate one is gorgeous!), they even do coloured ones in stick form as well, they are all lovely (and effective) too. I'm not so keen on the 'vaseline/petroleum' based ones myself, they just don't seem to penetrate the lips and aren't so effective (in my opinion anyway!) Perhaps these are better more as a preventative measure against dryness rather than a solution if they already are!0 -
Another vote for Blistex Relief Cream here as well. I used to be on medication that seriously dried out my lips until they were flaky and bleeding. Blistex was the best I found. As nice as 8 hour cream looks and smells, it is really just glorified vaseline.
I also liked Chopsaver - it's designed by a trumpeter. Apparently trumpeters get really dry lips. Anyway, it's pretty good and not expensive - I bought it for less than £5 from eBay.
And drink a ridiculously large amount of water until you feel like you need to pee all the time.0 -
In desperation I once used some cheapy, rich eye cream on chapped lips, and it worked like a charm. I ended up using more of the small tube on my lips than on my eyes! Never found that brand again, it was a flea market find...
Most moisturisers/body butters etc work well enough on lips - I tend to use a bit of thick moisturiser followed a short while later by vaseline to keep that moisture in when my lips feel very dry and cracked.Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!0 -
I always carry a tube of the Blistex Relief Cream and also a tub of the Blistex Med Plus for daily use (although have just seen that this also comes in a stick). Most other lip balms, vaseline especially, just slide off my lips as soon as I put them on! Carmex is also good, they do different flavours and one with SPF15.0

The best lip balm I have tried is from Akamuti:

It's a little pricy to buy online once you have added P&P but they do sell it in some shops.0
