  • Wow, thanks everyone for such comprehensive replies.

I'm not sure why my lips are so dry - I do drink a medium amount of coffee but always drink plenty of water too, at least 1 litre a day but usually more. Interested in the advice about getting good oils into your diet - what's the best way to do this? I do take a cod liver oil and evening primrose oil supplement and eat oily fish too. Don't drink much alcohol. Don't wear lipstick which feels very drying, like those ones that are supposed to stay on all day...!

I found the advice me lips becoming reliant on Vaseline struck a chord and maybe this is what has happened as I have used nothing else for years.

Plenty of good advice for things to try - I hadn't even thought about something as simple as coconut oil! - so will try a few and see how I get on.

    Thanks again!
  • Forgot to mention I recently tried the Boots Protect and Perfect lip balm which they say will "smooth and hydrate for 24 hours". I'm not sure what is in this but I haven't found it has helped me at all which is a shame as I really thought this might do the trick.

My advice is: DO NOT buy commercial lip balms. They all contain mineral oils and drying ingredients such as menthol. Even the so-called "natural" ones will be making your lips worse. I was disgusted to find that even the Burts Bees one is full of nasty ingredients.

Make your own! Get some beeswax (you can buy bags of it online from websites that sell candle or soapmaking supplies) and coconut oil (or olive oil, or whatever natural oil you fancy) chuck them in a pan, melt, mix around, and pour and wait to set.

Easy peasy and it's lots of fun, too!

Edit: coconut oil (or any kind of oil) on its own, as other people are recommending, will not be much good. It will be gone in a matter of minutes once applied. Blended with beeswax it will thicken up, and have super duper staying power!

    Blistex Relief Cream.
Another vote for this product! I always get badly chapped lips every winter no matter how much lipsalve I slather on; this is the only product I've tried that actually soothes, heals and mends sore dry lips.

I agree that it doesnt last 24 hours more like an hour. I was very disappointed with this and much prefer the body shop lip butters.
  • Exfoliating your lips then moisturising them is a good move. Sara Happ Lip Scrub is a fab product!

The Spiezia Organics lip balm has not one single nasty ingredient in it.

I find that Nivea works better than any lip balms. Slather it on at night, a bit less rubbed in during the day. Just the standard Nivea cream in the dark blue pot.
