Vets with £ signs in their eyes

  • The good old "my dog has lived for ever without seeing a vet" routine. This is a pervasive form of backward thinking which actually reveals itself in a blaze of stupendous glory when the pet finally requires attention from a Vet (about 10mins from euthanasia in most cases), by showing all those problems which may have been helped had it been presented just a bit earlier. For those of you who have not had to deal with the fall out from lungworm infection (most I would guess); you're just lucky.. thats all. As for expense - you can't have it both ways - professional fees have risen exponentially as prescription drugs prices have fallen - that is what you all asked for and it is what you have got :). I'm still a lot cheaper than my dentist or my lawyer and only actually on an hourly rate equivalent to the monkey who looks after the computers.
There is the unmistakeable smell of troll in here.

My Vet deserves every penny he gets from us, I dont begrudge him at all and never would.
He sees TJ whenever its needed and believe me its often. He has compassion, he knows his stuff and most of all he saved TJ`s life. What more could I ask for in my vet.
So if my Vet says TJ needs X Y or Z then thats what TJ gets.
Of course its a buisness. A Vet has to live, pay staff and has overheads like the rest of us.
Three cheers for the Vets I say, hip hip hurray from a very satisfied TJ (dog) slave.

In actual fact Milbemax is not a preventative and is normally only used when the dog has Lungworm and then it is a daily treatment (which works out VERY expensive). Nothing in the UK is licensed for preventative treatment, just treatment. Treatment options for Lungworm (Angiostrongylus vasorum) are very limited and still in the testing stage really and only Milbemycin and Advocate are licensed.

If only it wasn't the law that everybody should have a pet, then maybe those that couldn't afford vets bills needn't have a pet.

    What?

    There isn't a law?

You can choose NOT to have a pet?
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
  • I took my dog to the vets today for her kennel jabs she was due them in may but we forgot, we thought that she would need the full set but the vet said that she would only need a booster because she's not that far out of date and she looks really healthy for her age 12! So well chuffed only cost us £28

    That's a bit of a bargain!

I supplied the vaccine for my pups 2nd vacc (Vet didn't stock the brand I wanted) and was charged a £26 consult fee plus £15 for giving the vacc. I think that was OTT.
Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree! :D

As with any business there are good vets, bad vets and then there are GREAT vets :)
I have a friend who's a vet and knowing her personally has only increased my respect and trust in her as a vet :) If she tells me the dog, one of the 2 cats or the rabbit (don't ask) needs something then they gets it... I'm no vet, I'm a fairly well educated and informed person allegedly but I did not do years of training to become a qualified vet.
Yes vets tend to work with a limited set of suppliers, this ironicallly is often to keep prices down as they get better prices from the reps if they spend more with them... so some things will cost more than other brands but it may have been done to bring down the cost of a larger amount of other drugs or supplies...
If you don't like the treatment or advice of a vet... find a new one :) There are vets who will pamper your pet down to the toes, and others who are no-nonsense and no frills and frankly not tolerant of over indulgent owners :) (I'm probably one of those owners) - pick one that thinks and feels the same way you do about pets :)
And accept that this is a business - a business with large overheads and business loans to repay, salaries to cover and I don't blame them for sending out advertising... we're in a credit crunch after all and more than anything... a lot of people "forget" to vaccinate their pets because it's not cheap. Forgetting that treating the illness is often far more expensive if treatable at all :(

  • It's like anything really, there are great vets and not so great vets and you just need to use your best judgement at deciding what catergory your vet falls into.

I love my vet, they aren't the cheapest but they are excellent. My cat had a life threatening bout of pancreatitis and they couldn't have done more to help. There was a vet nurse there overnight so I knew he wasn't just left in a cage, all his tests and bloodwork were done on site and I was free to go visit whenever I wanted, the on call vet even asked when I was planning to arrive so she could be there to answer any questions I had.

I have tried a cheaper vet but I felt more like I was visiting a salesman than a vet, he wanted to palm off 3 different kinds of cat food, 1 normal, 1 kitten, and 1 for overweight. When I told I fed orjien that was suitable for all of them he told me it was a con and that when my cats got seriously ill he wouldn't say I told you so(how nice of him...).

With my current vet I'm just happy that any treatment she suggests isn't because she is mentally counting how much money she can make but because she thinks its the best treatment for him.

    Couldnt agree more :T
I have so much appreciation for the vet that treats my cat, only recently he spotted something that saved my cats life - and I feel forever indebted to him for it!

OP if you feel your vet is ripping you off find another one! Whilst obviously the vets are running a business, the one we use genuinly is compassionate and has the animals best interests at heart.
