A few years back, I was driving home after a night shift. Saw the remains of a cat at the side of the road. Carried on driving, but something made me think "If that was my cat, I wouldnt want it squashed all over the road". So I turned back to move it onto the grass. It was a cold morning, and when I approached it, I could see it was still breathing. It had blood on its nose and a little by its eyes. I put it in the car, phoned the rspca (I think), and luckily, the The Royal Veterinary College was a few miles down the road in Potters Bar. Took the cat there (after it had pooed on my big thick works coat!) and they took it off my hands and straight into surgery. I later found out that it made a full recovery and was rehomed. I was sent a bill (for about £250!), even tho' the vet had said they were only taking my details for information! A quick phone call had my name removed as the owner, and no further bills were sent.
I dont think the vet college was part of the rspca, but just thought I'd add my happy story in among the sad ones!0 -
Just a quick update on the dogs progress whilst I'm having my lunch
MortgageDoggy is OK now and recovering from his surgery. I visited him this morning and he recognised me but he's not allowed any food yet as he had had an internal bleed and he has ruptured his throat so can't eat yet.
The vet says he will have problems walking for the rest of his life, but he'll still be able to get around.
The dog was microchipped so they contacted who they thought was his owner, only to be told he was sold to someone in Leeds over 18 months ago and was no longer their dog, but they are looking for the contact details of the buyer (he must have walked a long way to get from leeds to Colne) - so don't know what will happen there
As for the bill, its not as bad as I thought - just £586 but I don't have to pay it (at the moment) as hopefully they will trace the owner

MortgageMamma, I hope the dog is recovering well, and that if he has an owner, they've got him insured. He's lucky someone like you found him. Well done for taking responsiobility for the poor thing when those who ought to have didn't. If he's unclaimed, I hope you don't have to go through too much red tape to take him home with you.
My 12-year-old son found a pigeon with an injured wing on Sunday. It was drooling, looked generally unwell (and a bit thin) and didn't put up much resistance when he picked it up. Since the vets were closed, he phoned the SSPCA, and they asked if we could keep it till the following day. We explained that we have 2 cats and that the pigeon looked quite unwell, but they still asked us to keep it overnight. I was afraid it might die during the night and that my son would then get upset, but luckily it was looking a lot better by the morning when they came to collect it (and my son, who'd been caring for it and found it to be quite friendly, wanted to keep it and look after it ourselves!)
Today I phoned the local wildlife hospital where it was taken and they said it's doing fine, and should be fit for release in about a couple of weeks, so my son will be pleased to hear that. If he hadn't rescued it, a cat would probably have got it.0 -

I know this sounds like a stupid question but are you not worried about bird flu? I won't let my kids pick up a feather or anyting at the moment. Glad the birdies alright though - I used to do stuff like that as a kid, but my mum and dad drew the line when I brought home an injured frog!I am a Mortgage Adviser

That's great news MortgageMamma, if his owner's do show up I I hope they deserve to have him back :-\
Unfortunately dogs do get stolen all over the country and then dumped if they can't find a buyer, often many miles away. It's a particular problem with pedigree dogs, so it is feasible it happened to this lad.
Whatever the outcome, you've done an amazing thing in taking him in!When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.0 -
I would definately go to your local paper to shame the rspca, they usually love stories of this type, I would never give to the rspca , I have read too many shocking stories about their unwillingness to help in these types of situations. good luck with doggie. xx. I am one of those "loonies " that prefer animals to people!:rotfl:0

 2nd owner located - he too had sold this dog when his girlfriend got pregnant, and all he could tell us about the buyer is that is is an asian family from Burnley (I though Asians didn't like dogs?) so the search for the rightful owner has come to a dead end. Have telephoned the local paper and given details this afternoon, so hopefully someone will recognise mortgagedoggy and come and take him.I am a Mortgage Adviser
