Tiny XP is very good the later ones come with SP3. Works well in virtual machines and runs much faster than std XP. I have not known of any problems associated with Tiny XP. What has to be asked is the guy who owns the computer happy with his setup. If he is and believes there is nothing wrong with the system, then you are flogging a dead horse.
I doubt he bought the system from a shop and may very well aware that it's not a licensed copy that would have cost him more to buy the system.

BTW you can update tiny xp but not via the normal means.

Unless you are taking monies for fixing this machine your have no right to be indignant that he has a pirate copy. Indeed even if you are taking money you have no right to tell him/her that something is wrong because it is a pirate copy.

Why was TinyXP installed in the first place if as you say its a Mighty powerful quad core beast of a machine?

Was it principally used as a gaming machine and is it now required for other uses?

Can you give more info about the system setup.

@mr-mr a prog called nlite can be used to strip down windows xp -I don't know what is usually cut but prob a bit of googling would give an idea , don't know if it wouldn't be perfectly ok to strip down your own xp?????
Guess many peeps would just use a torrent site to get tinyxp without ever buying their own.

I said I would go away and do a bit of research as I was a bit uncomfortable with the set-up. When I read up on TinyXP I was appalled actually. I reckon he has an illegal version of Windows (without knowing it) plus no IE and no way of enabling Windows updates.

You could try WSUS Offline Update to update his XP. You download all the updates on your computer and take all the updates on a DVD with you and run the updater on his computer. No idea if it will break something on his TinyXP though...

well, I for one am happy with DX9, DX10 adds little to justify the performance drop, and DX11 isn't supported by my GPU..or most games :)
Don't be fooled into believing that because it exists it's got to be worthwhile, most enthusiasts are pretty grounded in reality :)

..currently playing !!!!! II @ 1680x1050, high, all on except physX which adds very little to the game for the performance cost (some particle effects etc..) :D

I agree! DX10 has never added much and that DX9 is more than adequate for most gamers and that playing games in DX9 is best in XP. But even though there are not a lot of games out that fully support DX11 yet, I believe it will deliver more than DX10 ever did in the near future.

So if your happy playing in DX9 or thats all your hardware allows and you have no desire for DX11, XP is all good. If you want to play games in DX9,10 or 11 and have the hardware or are going to upgrade at some point your better off with Vista or Windows 7.

Like I said before (in not so many words!) the difference in playing games in XP, Vista and Windows 7 is marginal unless your using ancient tech of course. Its all down to a matter of preference really and what your happy with. ;)

    I guess TinyXP won't support a quad-core CPU.

Possible options are Windows 7 (maybe 64-bit), Linux, or Solaris.

If he's got kids in school or education he may be able to get Win 7 at a good price from softwareforstudents.

Thanks for the advice. I'm not taking money actually. Apologies, I didn't think I was sounding indignant. And BTW I wasn't telling him what was right or wrong, I simply want to give him some honest advice. If he wants to remain illegal that's up to him, but I wanted him to be aware of this.
  • I'll find out a bit more about the set-up. It has two graphics cards and I asked him if he played games on it and he said 'no' - just a bit of browsing and MS Office. It was 'built' for him by his computer guy who now seems to have disappeared......

Two graphics cards and quad core for a bit of browsing and MS office....

Just wonder what the computer guy charged your neighbour for that setup?
