Just a thought but have you tried turning any security off on your sons computer? then try and connect. Turn it all off ie antivirus, firewall etc as it sounds security related to me. If that does not work then uninstall all of the wifi drivers and do a reboot, then re-install the drivers and even if it does not require a reboot do it any way. Worth a try.
    Fingers crossed Sarge:)

I've actually removed the anti-virus programme all together. I have uninstalled and re-install the software too! Perhaps I'll try it one last time. But it looks like the Homeplugs are the way to go! (A neighbour with the same problem has used the homeplugs and solved it)

Many thanks everyone else too for your suggestions.

Have got InSSIDer and tried most channels available.
Does it see your network as the strongest signal? You could "test" by linking to another unsecured network shown by inSSIDer (with their permission, of course).

Use a network cable to connect your lappy to the router, which you can now reset by pushing a paperclip into the little hole in the back, between the power supply and the ON/OFF switch.

On the lappy click "Start" then "Run" and put COMMAND in the box. When the DOS box opens type "IPCONFIG" (WITHOUT THE QUOTES).

Type the DEFAULT GATEWAY VALUE into your browser.

You can now change the security password etc on both the router and the lappy at the same time.

Have you got an access list of allowed MAC addresses set on the router?

    Hi All,

I have solved the problem. I have installed a new wireless router, computer connected on the first attempt! I assume the old router wasn't working properly - the dongle could see the router, but the router couldn't see the dongle!

If anyone is having the same problem... try another router (my neighbour lent me one to try!)

    Cheers

  • just saw this tread , you could try changing the channel being used by the router from the web config page. I had a similar issue on channel 11 , but moved it to channel 2 and bobs ur uncle.
