    The encryption is WPA TKIP
    Tried all the USB ports
We have tried both Windows and the Dongles own software
    Operating system is Windows XP

    Thanks
  • You say it connects then connects to the internet then drops off, so does that mean if you open your browser you actually get a few seconds of surfing the net before it dies?

Google for Netstumbler which works on XP or "inSSIDer".

These will allow you to see not only your own but other local networks, even if they are not broadcasting their SSID.

Set your channel to be well away from any strong local systems.

Does the laptop work via a network cable attached direct to the router?
  • Sorry. i missed the point that you replaced the broken dongle (ooppppsss)

You have installed any drivers that were included with the wifi dongle haven't you?

The wifi dongle broke (after he kicked it) on my sons computer, so I have bought a new one.

was there a reason for giving it the big welly?
