what type of encryption? Tried different usb port? Which software is managing the wireless, windows or proprietary? Operating system?!!

You say it connects then connects to the internet then drops off, so does that mean if you open your browser you actually get a few seconds of surfing the net before it dies?0

Google for Netstumbler which works on XP or "inSSIDer".
These will allow you to see not only your own but other local networks, even if they are not broadcasting their SSID.
Set your channel to be well away from any strong local systems.
Does the laptop work via a network cable attached direct to the router?0 -

Yes, and we've tried that and the Windows software0 -
