  • Hello thought I would come and join was a regular poster on pregnancy thread and being cheeky but am after some advice also!!

Ok so my little boy was 7wks old on wednesday and for past 3 wks has had a cold so been very snuffly so feeding little and often but is starting to get over the cold now.

The issue I have is that he will not feed off the left side (this used to be his fav side), he latches on takes couple sucks and then comes off and screams - this has been for past 7-10 days admittley it does flow quite fast so he dribbles alot of it and I was expressing to try and ease the engorment from him not feeding but have stopped this now.

He will feed for couple mins off it last feed and during the night but literally max of 3-4mins, so right breast is not satisfying him as he empties it and then it never gets chance to produce enough before he wants more as he wants feeding every 2 hrs if not more in the day.

He wont take a bottle he just doesnt know how to suck the teat have tried tommee tippee closer to nature and also a brand called breastflow with no luck - husband has tried him as well (he did take at 2wks old and threw it up but didnt ever suck teat properly)

Health visitor didnt really have an answer she just said offer left side first which I have been doing and for past couple days he has prob taken a little more from left than he has been but when hes really hungry and tired he will only go on right and never has a full feed from left.

We currently have no routine with him other than a bedtime one of bath at 6.30pm (husband likes to do this he gets home at 5.50/6pm we eat first- otherwise wouldnt get another chance) then feed at 6.45pm and 50% of the time he is down at 7.45/8pm, then will wake around 10-11pm when he hasnt we have woken him but he doesnt take a huge amount at this feed (the other 50% of the time we can have a tired screaming baby who doesnt settle til 9pm and then wakes at around 12/1), at night he wakes 3hrly until 4/5am then he will wake hrly til we get him up at 7.15/7.30am then during the day he feeds whenever he wants roughly 2hrly but does just have it when he wants!

If go out for the day its a little more structured and he does sleep in between.

he doesnt settle to sleep without a feed - if put into crib he just cries and have tried leaving for upto 45mins but he becomes so distressed and we feel guilty - I have even gone outside just so cant hear him.

At night we only pick him up to feed when he really cries as well.

I stupidly read the Gina Ford book which made me feel like a failure so have stuck it back on ebay!!

we have a 3 storey house so he is in a large crib in our room as his nursery is on floor below.

    Any advice very welcome.......

Is it weird that I feel strange about receiving a Cow & Gate weaning pack? The porridge contains dairy and citrus, which I didn't think you were really meant to give little babies.

welcome and congratulations freebie!!! there are lots of BF experts here that will help you with good advice. Have you tried lying down when feeding him on that side? i always found that feeding that way was easier and also baby fed better, it doesnt work for everyone but worth a go.

Well done Big Erin! 7th is amazing!

Freebie - Hey Hun..... cant offer any advice on boob feeds im afraid..... just wanted to say you're doing a fab job.
At his age, from what i know, babies only cry because they want something, be it feed, cuddles, winding, changing etc...

My only constructive advice is to stick two fingers up to Gina Ford... follow your instincts xx

Freebie - Does it hurt or anything on that side, or is literally just baby being screamy? I think someone on here once had a similar problem and discovered baby had an earache so didn't want to lay that way. Have you tried other positions (like rugby hold or lying down) to see if that will help him take the left?

    Hi Freebie queen.

I'm not sure if I have much useful to say about your left boob problem. It sounds like you are doing the right thing in keeping on trying him - have you tried different positions to see if that helps? It may be that he is more comforable lying on his left side than his right iyswm, so maybe you could try feeding lying down, with him to your right, but position yourself so he is feeding from your left breast? (might be a bit tricky with one so tiny, so you might want to lie him on a pillow to lift him up a bit). Or have you tried the rugby ball hold?

I'm sure you will get some more suggestions too - we have a bf counsellor on here, and between us we have loads of bf experience, so there is probably someone whose been through similar.

I have to say that it sounds like you are doing a great job. It definitely gets easier as you go on, and start trusting your instincts. Oh, and my stance (although there are some stricter mummies on here too ;) ) is not to worry too much about feeding him to sleep if that is what it takes. You will get to the point where it drives you up the wall and you have to do something about it (which will involve listening to him cry!), but if you do it when he is bigger at least you will recognise it as "I'm cross and trying my luck" crying, rather than actual being hungry iyswim.

Oh, and we have to introduce you to the two mantras - "I'm doing a great job" and also "smile and nod" (to be used when speaking to healthvisitors and well meaning but annoying people trying to give you advice. like me )
