Everyone?! I got an A in Maths 22.gif if you need any help ;)

I suppose we must be quite lucky in that there are like 25 primary schools local enough to choose from and probably about 10 HSs there is a private one really close that a few friends went to, I don't think they got any better education than me really but then I went to a HS out of county, not the one I lived 3mins walk from ;)

Susan, can I ask what you're planning to make sure Alice is able to socialise with other kids? My brother was homeschooled and had no activities with kids his own age, which is why (I think) he is the way he is now. I'm sure you've thought about it though and was wondering what you've come up with :)
I have friends with similar aged children who I meet up with - one family is home educating too so we may get together for some educational things. There are children she's friendly with at church and they have a young people's group which she'll be able to go to when she's older. There's a gymnastics club in our old village (about two miles away) which I'm planning to look into for her some time soon and even though I could do it myself we'll probably send her to swimming lessons for the social aspect. I want to make sure she has at least one regular activity which she goes to which is "hers" (as opposed to something we do as a family) and with people her own age but I'm happy for what it specifically is to change (within reason) as she gets older according to her preferences. As long as she's happy and able to socialise/interact with a variety of people I'm happy.

    (Another) personal question... :o

what would you do if she asked to go to school at some point?
It's hard to say because it would depend on the circumstances and reasons and whether I felt she fully appreciated the choice she would be making. (I imagine that most home-educated children will say they want to go to school at some point in the same way that most children who go to school don't want to at some point.) Our current intention is to home-educate all the way through but we do realise that may not work out for all sorts of reasons so certainly wouldn't say that we would never ever send her to school at any stage.

Okay, so what I am really asking, is what would you guys do?
I don't know whether the rules are the same in Scotland as they are in England and Wales but here if you believe a child is not receiving a "suitable education", you can inform the LEA who will then investigate. I don't know how often it gets as far as the courts but the court can order a child to be sent to school if they are not satisified that the parents are providing a suitable education otherwise.

That's not entirely fair, my mother did maths worksheets with him a couple of times a week and had a friend come over to try and teach him science. But whenever Brother said he'd had enough it was enough, and now he's learned that he doesn't have to stick to anything and people should just do what he tells them.
I wish Alice would admit it when she's had enough. I have to be mean mummy who stops her doing activity books when she thinks she wants to because she'll insist she wants to do them but I can tell she's had enough because she goes silly.

SS, is all I can say about your brother - although I suspect you have stronger words. How's Molly feeling?

I have many stronger words, it does make me sad that he's the way he is but part of it is that he was inclined that way and part of it is that he was enabled by my parents.

That sounds ideal Susan - I knew you'd have thought it all out and come to a sensible conclusion.

Tia I think a microscope sounds like an excellent idea.

I've been C&P my bingo drivel - I fail to see why I shouldn't, since I'm only saying the same thing ten times anyway and everyone else is at it. I got shouted at for saying AWESOME in caps this morning in the chat room - apparently only the room hosts or whatever are allowed to use caps. Still, after my adventures in pushchair loaning while my lovely Stokke is still in for repairs I've got halfway towards my next dooyoo fiver on 600-point pushchair reviews :money:

Because the schools in this area aren't great.

Everyone in my year at school failed maths GCSE
 That is shocking. It makes me so  that so many schools are failing the pupils so badly. (I worked in a school where they got 100% or close to 100% 5A*-C every year with a national average intake so I know it's possible for most pupils to do that well with a decent school.)
