In some car mag reports on their fleet cars, most have commentated that the non metallic painted cars have picked up more 'chips' than the varnished (I can't spell lackked) ones - due to the solid paints being softer?

sounds like b0ll0x to me as even solid colours are clear coated (lacquered) these days same as metallic.
so cannot see what they are on about
  • I would try and see the car you want in white or other colours. I think you should make the choice on what you like rather than the extra for the paint. If your first thought is you are not sure perhaps it is not for you.

If you have seen lots the white cars do you want to be one of the crowd. I had a black corsa a few years ago. When I purchased it there were hardly any black ones. Within the next year they were so many. I can't tell you how many times I went to the wrong car in the carpark. As the others have said black is a pig to keep clean.
  • My parents had a white golf when I was little, I think the bonnet must have started to rust as my Dad had to patch it but he seemed to have gone down the money saving route and bought red hammerite as it was about half the price of white so we had a red stripe on the front of the car and it looked like lipstick! Thats what he told us when we asked him why he got red anyway! If you go for black then you have to get a car that looks better dirty than clean so something like a truck or a 4x4.

We had a white Carina, was less dirty than we thought it would be - loved it, but then I cared more about the reliability than the colour of it - there was a purple Carina in the car dealership when we went to look, but it was dearer for a similar mileage, so we got the white one.

It got washed every 6 months whether it needed it or not!:rotfl:

I've got a white ford focus, I think it looks pretty nice, and although it gets filthy easily and fairly quickly. there is a satisfaction when cleaning it, and it also has the added benefits of showing you where you've missed :)

We have a silver car just now and it is the best colour. We had a mid silver grey car - which is even better for hiding the dirt.

We had white cars in the 1980s and found they did get dirty faster than our silver cars.

    Black shows dust.
