Why do people like to interfere?

I got a mouthful of abuse from an old man on the bus 2 days ago, he was ranting about me being an unwed mother, and then kept crossing himself, then called my DD a B*****. Some people are boggling!
I'd have been tempted to call him a 'See You Next Tuesday' in return

Thanks for all the great replies. Myself and my partner had a chuckle at some of the great suggestions as to how to get our own back when they make their remarks.
Seems like its a common thing relatives and others interfering in peoples lives.
Thanks again

People seem to like to criticise others, I personally believe that it's because they secretly feel that there's something lacking in their own lives. As you get older there seems to be more subjects that you can be criticised about;
Getting married too young
Not getting married
Having children
Not having children
Being a working mother
Being a bad employee (taking maternity leave, having to take time off to look after a sick child etc)
Staying at home and 'sponging off the taxpayers'
Breastfeeding
Bottlefeeding
I could go on but I'm depressing myself. If you read enough threads you will find various versions of all these thinly veiled accusations. I'm personally fed up with being criticised so I've decided that I'm just going to revel in being a bad mother, bad wife and a bad employee
Working hard in the hopes of being 'lucky'

Legally, being married has a great deal to recommend it, particularly if there are children.
That said, a lot of people just like to interfere, either out of malice or because it makes them feel important."Never underestimate the mindless force of a government bureaucracyseeking to expand its power, dominion and budget"Jay Stanley, American Civil Liberties Union.0
