Bought a nearly new mervia design (2009) today, got home tonight was looking for the alloy wheel locking key (assuming there is one)

to my horror I found there was no spare wheel in the boot compartment

having read the handbook it states "some" models don't come with a spare wheel, they have a tyre fixing kit, which mine appears to have

so my query is how do I know if my mervia should have a spear tyre or not

also should there a alloy wheel locking device

could someone please confirm either way, thanks

further update, 03.Sep.2010 - 19.00hrs

this may be getting out of hand now, have been doing a bit of digging and checking for various features/bits
I'm
finding the handbook a tad confusing, when it states * optional extra on so many items

I'm looking for the following bits now

there appears to be no cigarette lighter , however there is a socket, which appears in the handbook as a optional extra (Thankfully the sat nav works off this at least)

now I have also found there's no wheel jack , wheel nut wrench or alloy wheel locking nuts
(have looked in the storage compartment where the tyre kit was and there no jack, nor no wheel wrench nor no alloy wheel key)

can someone please confirm weather the 2009 Mervia design 1.4 should have the items listed above

the handbook is very confusing, it tells you about a part or feature then puts a star to indicate optional extra

btw, thanks to all for the advice/comments/updates

Pop down to your local dealer and pick up a brochure.

If the car has no spare wheel it should have a compressor and a bottle of gunk with a screw on filling tube. If there is a lock on each wheel, denoted by a different nut/bolt then the locking wheelnut key should be in the same tray as the gunk or bundled with the toolkit. For some new cars they leave the locking wheelnut key in the glovebox.

  • I'd just buy a 2nd hand wheel from a scrappie and ditch the tyre gunk.

Good luck with it, and I sincerely hope it will be trouble free for you. Be prepared for the electric power steering to fail and require a complete steering column. Also listen for "groaning" noises from the front when manoeuvring - that means a new steering rack. Lots of other potential problems too numerous to list! I think I had most with mine.
I recently off loaded my 2008 Meriva, a total pile of crap - for me anyway. A shame because it's a good practical car otherwise.
Yes, Vauxhall, like others decided to penny pinch and not provide a spare, but as said there should be some useless inflation kit instead. Just the job stuck in the middle of nowhere with a split, un-repairable tyre in the middle of the night!?
Of course the spare was a £100 option new. Fortunately mine had one.

This is the confusing thing about Vauxhalls. If you can get an identical alloy wheel then great. If not the steel spares are often different size and have a higher profile tyre on it. For example: My Corsa has 15" alloys with 185/55 tyres and the steel spare is a 14" wheel with 185/65 tyre. I thought the incorrect wheel had been supplied so when I checked the brochure nearly all Corsas come with undersized steel spares.

The steel spare, when supplied with a Meriva is, fortunately (or not?) the same size as the other wheels (15 inch) usually.
However, I'm glad you mentioned the Corsa. My daughter's has 14 inch wheels and the spare is 13 inch. I suspected someone had done an exchange, before she bought it, for whatever reason. Obviously not though. I've never checked the profile but that's no doubt different and why the car sits level with the spare fitted.:)

the spares are normally "space savers" or something like that.. and are often smaller than the actual wheels on the car..

agree with the ditch the can of carp and get a wheel

why not goto the dealer and ask

this is all far too dramatic for me

because I bought it from a carsupermarket (Motorpoint) to be exact and there 50 miles away and not my local dealer

almost drove straight back about the spare wheel, until I was advised on here that I've got a spare tyre kit rather than a spare wheel

like I said the handbook is a bit confusing, it listing items then adds a * to state optional
