not fair :( Just a rant!

  • Flossie, I feel you. Different scenario, but this thread definitely struck a chord with me. For the past 5 years I've been building my career in London and renting privately, currently a 1-bed shoebox together with my OH for £950p/m. No cars, public transport all the way. We recently went to visit a friend from school (so same age as me) in her gorgeous new 4-bed house with 2 new cars on the drive - not in London, of course. The kicker is, she and her husband also own a 2-bed place they're letting out and they pay less p/m on mortgage than we do on rent!

I know there are a zillion different factors involved, not just geographical, and I love London, I do, but I can't help but feel a bit  sometimes that the discrepency is SO big.

Rant over. Sorry for the hijack! (And, even in the city here, our aeriel reception is so bad, some days we can't get any TV reception at all... :o)

sorry, haven't read all replies, might be repeating but....

i cancelled my sky package, haven't bought any boxes ,or any cards etc and i get loads of channels -for nothing!!??
hope this can work for you. it was actually the sky man who cancelled my plan that told me this would work.

We did this too and we get most of the free channels, there are a few that we don't get that you do get on freeview, but then again we can live without them! We did it a year or so ago and it's nice not having to pay Sky anymore. I did miss Sky1 for a little bit though, but that soon went when I realised that I was paying £18 a month for TV just to really watch Sky1.

I cancelled my Sky two years ago and am still using the box and card to get freeview, tho recently some channels have disappeared. Sky can't ditch all of them tho so I still get most.
We were thinking of getting a freesat box but if I read correctly I can just call Sky or Freesat (which? either?) to get a card for £20ish. Is that right?

I huff and strop like kevin the teenager all the time. 'it's just not faaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiirrrrrrrrrrrrr' etc etc

My current moans are, the scottish government scrapped parking fees at hospitals, but my local hospital slod its carpark to a parking company who implement charges. £1.70 for 4 hours. doesn't sound alot but I don't keep well plus i'm pregnant with consultant care so all antenatal appointments are at the hospital and my pelvis is giving up so i have physio at the hospital too. I have seen me having to be there 3-4 times a week and its costing me a small fortune.

Trying to sell our home, lots of interest but no sale yet. We have had 3 couples interested and neither could raise the deposit requirments of their chosen lender. In 2007 this would of sold for more within days so thats not fair either.

We live in a conservation area and sky is banned, freeview signal is weak so that leaves up with virgin media only which I do not like but have. I really grudge paying them each month

  • Freesat from Sky is £20, and as long as you have a SKY box and a dish they just post you a card... I don't think you get Dave or Virgin, but not 100% sure

The other version is the new box versions - i think i saw the SD box in Argos for £30 - has all the traditional Freeview channels on it - if you get the HD version (£100?) then you get a few HD channels too (BBCHD, erm and 2 more at the moment i think). This works usually works on a Sky dish, but may need rejigging in some cases.

I've tried both (on the satellite I had from Sky) and both were fine.

I have a little adaptor on my PC that gives me freeview (cost £15 from Amazon - probs cheaper now), it's great because I can record TV (like Sky+) via the Windows Media Centre on my PC and as the TV guide updates and shows you 2 weeks in advance, it's so handy.

I like to watch films, so the guide filters out everything but films so I can plan/record/note what I want to watch - even has a 'record series' button...and as I have a laptop, I networked it together so I can watch TV in bed. God bless technology!

    Well, you can either plug in your TV aerial or use the aerial provided. It seems to help the signal if you use your aerial as you can choose which signal your TV runs from - so you might be able to boost signals through that - anyway i'm waffling...it's explained here;

    http://www.radioandtelly.co.uk/onyourpc.html

and if you look for a 'USB TV stick' - you can buy them at varying prices :)

Have you managed to get anywhere with getting on that scheme to get half your water bill paid yet Chick?
I refuse to be afraid of the big bad wolf, spiders, or debt collection agencies; one of them's not real and the other two are powerless without my fear.
(Ok, one of them is powerless, spiders can be nasty.)

As of the last count I have cleared
    [STRIKE]23.16%[/STRIKE] 22.49% of my debt. :(
  • Hey Hannah, No I've not done anything about it yet (slap wrists!) I know in your reply to me you suggested someone would need to 'nominate' us for the discount. Was it cab you mentioned? We don't have any services like that in or near our town so just wondered if they can help over phone? Will definately look into it more this weekend though!
