not fair :( Just a rant!

Hi,

Just looking at ways to reduce our monthly income so that I could comfortably go part time after maternity.

Whilst doing so i realised we have some big costs and it's just made me angry to realise we have to pay more for things because of where we live so just wanted to rant!

We currently pay £37 to sky plus our phone rental to BT of £12.00 and our broadband to BT of £15 per month so a total of £65 for these services.

Whilst we can (and will be) losing sky sports to bring the sky down to £18, because of the area we live in no tv signal can be recieved so we have to have sky if we want a tv (digital and freeview don't work here either and there is no cable)

Also because of the area we live in and something to do with the exchange we don't qualify for any of the deals for broadband/phone/sky inclusive or the cheap offers from people like O2 (who my mobile is with). so the BT package is actually the cheapest we can get

We also pay the highest water bills in the country (50%) higher than some places

Does anyone else find it unfair that you can't qualify for certain deals and have to pay more just because of where you live?

gahh it just bugs me - not expecting any replies just needed to rant!

  • it varies no matter where you live im afraid - as does wages
  • I know it's swings and roundabouts probably but it just bugs me!

    Rubbish isn't it!!

I can't get freeview where I am as there is a hill in the way of the transmitter but I have an old sky box and a free sat card.

I think there was a one off cost to the card but after that it's free.

No problem with reception, if you can get sky you can get free sat.
  • Absolutely! We live in Hull, which has it's own telephone company, which is the only one we can have, as none of the others will pay for the cables to connect to their system, so we miss out on ALL of the other companie's deals!!!!

I was just going to say the same thing, you can go freesat which is more or less freeview (a few channels different) and of course is free.

As for general rants about costs due to area, nobody is forcing you to stay. Yes its not that simple but if it really bothers you it might be worth looking at relocation.

  • Thanks Percey! Was just a light hearted rant about some things seeming unfair (as life is generally!!) just because of where you live. It obviously affects people everywhere as I said swings and roundabouts!

Thanks for your helpful suggestion about moving, yes I could move hundreds of miles away from my job, family, friends to save a few quid but I would say that is a bit extreme. However, thanks for your input and will bear it in mind.
  • On another note just looked up freesat. Would I just have to buy the box (seems very reasonable at £25)? Or would I have to buy a dish too (I suppose ours technically belongs to sky), Is it easy enough for a pregnant lady to fit or would I have to pay an installer?

    Thanks if you know

Don't worry relocation wasn't a truely serious idea... but still a valid one.

Anyway back to the freesat, I assume you no long tied into a minimum term with sky? if so ring them up and say you want to go on freesat, I think they chagre a one-ff of about £20 and send you a freesat card. Just swap the cards and keep you current dish/box etc.

If you still in you minimum contract time just reduce it as much as possible and then cancel as soon as you can.
