VW Polo Blue Motion? Really fuel efficient?

OH is SE and does about 30k each year.
He needs to replace his car and is set on getting the Blue Motion due to VWs claims of the fuel reductions - he reckons he will save £1k per year in fuel costs + it's band A tax, so cheaper there too.
I think the inflated price of the VW is silly, especially as in 3 years it'll have 100k on the clock, but he reckons the resale value will hold.
I think he should buy a cheaper Japanese comfy car with a long warranty as it'll depreciate anyway, so the mileage will make little difference + less to depreciate when you've spent less in the first place.
Is the Blue Motion really that good?

£10,000 for a 1 year old Blue Motion on Autotrader with 20,000miles from a VW Dealer. This would come with the remainder of the VW warranty, and any extra warranties you can purchase.
I would expect to pay £9400 ishy
(£9800 for 12,000miles - http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201011354659574/sort/priceasc/usedcars/model/polo/make/volkswagen/postcode/dn331rh/page/1/radius/1501/keywords/blue%20motion?logcode=p)0 -

Yes.
I'd a Passat bluemotion 2 with a published combined of 57mpg. Over the course of a tank full that was the minimum i would get. Best was 65mpg (over 1000 miles on a 70 litre tank) and best single run was to work one day (23 miles A roads / motorway) of 90.1mpg.
I would highly recommend one for high miles, though i've heard the Polo version is quite slow, so make sure you test drive0 -

Likely to be better residuals on the VW to offset that though0 -
