Is One-Day Insurance Certificate GOOD ENOUGH for TAX DISC?
Comments

- you ever seen an insurance term/condition written like that, and since when could "individual" post offices decide what is and isn't acceptable?
If you ask at a post office before buying a policy, and get a favourable answer, then make sure the same biddy serves you when you go back!
Your posting what should happen not what does happen. No post office "should" decide what is and isnt acceptable but the practices from post office to post office us very different and some either dont know the rules or choose to ignore some of them.
Ive known some not accept a laser printed PDF cert and some would so in essence that is how I know.
Is that right no, for me I cant wait until they introduce the all vehicles must have insurance regardless of them being used or not as it eliminates these problems and at the same time cuts down on fruad.0 -

This thread is about using 1 day temp. insurance.StephenMarsh wrote:As far as I am aware a post office will accept one day..........
It is that question that I asked "How are you aware"! (The DVLA regs say to Post Offices they are NOT acceptable). The situation regarding jobsworth biddies saying NO to printed certificates is now covered! The DVLA regs says they are acceptable!
And it is no surprise to see you (a broker with more than just a passing interest) looking forward to us all having insurance regardless of whether we use the car or not!
Strange and selfish opinion to voice on a moneysaving website!0 -
from dvla website
Insurance cover needed to tax your vehicle
In order to tax your vehicle, you must have insurance cover that:- covers you against third party claims for death or injury and damage to property caused by using the vehicle
- covers your use of the vehicle for taxing purposes
- is valid on the day the tax disc comes into force
If your insurance cover for taxing purposes isn’t clear, you may need to provide additional evidence. Please contact your insurance company for advice.
Insurance certificates and cover notes
These are usually a printed or laser-printed document, or a plastic credit card style document.
Insurance certificates downloaded directly from the internet by the policy holder are acceptable from 30 April 2010 (this applies to GB only). Fax copies are also acceptable.
The following documents aren't acceptable:- policy schedule
- renewal notice
- receipt for payment
- amended certificate or cover note - unless stamped or initialled by the insurer
- ‘legal protection’ policy certificates
- foreign certificates
- photocopies
- Green Card (International Motor Insurance Card)

I called DVLA about 7 day cover, they said as long as theres cover for the day you go tax it it's fine... doesnt matter how long the covernote lasts for0
-
This thread is about single day insurance, quite different from a 7 day cover note0

What regs are you quoting to say one day insurance isn't acceptable.
The dvla regs state a copy isn't acceptable, it must be an original.
How do you prove that a self printed cert isn't a scanned copy, to a post offiice that refuses to accept it?0 -
You already been told self printed certificates are accepted now (since 30/4/10), and they consider day policies as "legal protection" policies.
See post #140 -
I am asking you how a day policy to insure a car is defined as a legal protection policy, and where you are getting the information from.0

Why? To help the OP or cause an argument? Or are you in the same boat - in that case the suggestion made earlier to take out a normal policy to start on the day you want to buy the tax and then immediately cancelling it will guarantee you get your tax for just the admin fee (maybe you can find an insurer that doesn't even charge a full adnin fee for cancellations during the cooling off period).0

To help the op, and to answer the question he asked.
You have stated the insurance he has asked about is no good, and further stated it is something it isn't.
Legal protection insurance will pay the costs involved in trying to recover 'uninsured losses' after a claim, and is usually bought with car insurance. I have asked why you think it is different in this case.
One day insurance should be no different from 7 day cover, or annual cover.
If you can find an insurance company that doesn't charge £50 or so cancellation ok, but not many people can nowadays.0
