Is One-Day Insurance Certificate GOOD ENOUGH for TAX DISC?

My friend's tax disc is about to expire and she wanted to know if she can pay for this £20 a day thing to print a Certificate of Insurance for 1 day and then use it in the Post Office with the MOT to get a Tax Disc?
Her question is will they accept the 1 Day Certificate or not? The DVLA website at Direct.gov.uk just says you need a valid certificate and it is valid but for 1 day - will that be acceptable for her to use it and get a Tax Disc?

Hi
As far as I know you just need to have Insurance on the day you buy the new tax disc.
I presume thereafter the car will be off the road, until further Insurance is arranged.
If she can't afford an annual policy or does not need one, it would be cheaper to arrange a slightly longer temporary policy. Companies like dayinsure offer cover up to 28 days at a time. The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.0 -
There is no "legal" period the insurance should be for, though DVLA (who make up their own rules) don't accept single day certificates.
You could take out a new 12 month policy (from a company offering a full refund if you cancel during the cooling off period) to start on the day you want to buy the tax, then immediately cancel it after buying the tax. An admin fee for cancelling is normally deducted from the refund.0 -
Can they not just SORN the car until they can get insurance?0

She just wants to sell the car and keep it off-road (she has space) until it's being sold, then buy insurance on the car for 2-3 days when the buyer comes to buy it, she doesn't mind to pay for his insurance but only when he buys the car, not before that (she wants to sit with him in the computer and pay for the policy and print the insurance documents for him once he buys it).
So basically she was wondering what she can do? They have 2 cars in the family and don't need the second one, but she does need a new tax disc for it, and the MOT is fine, it's only the tax disc and insurance that is missing since she's not driving the car.
Do you think the Post Office would accept the 1 day insurance?0 -

Ask the post office first.
From the daysure website.
Can I buy Road Tax with a dayinsure policy?
Yes. dayinsure short term insurance is suitable. (At the sole discretion of the individual post office and we cannot guarentee that it will be acceptable).0 -
Single day should be fine if the car is insured on the day the tax comes into force and the certificate you are using is the original0

Why do you say that?
1) It makes no difference what sort of certificate you have these days (original or self printed)
2) They don't accept single day (their "own" rule - as previously posted, there is no legal definition on how long a policy should run)0 -

As far as I am aware a post office will accept one day providing there is cover in place on the day the tax starts.
I make reference to the certificate because the biggest hang up for post offices is many are not educated as to what they can and cannot accept still and will cling to needing an original. Therefore if you have an original cert insuring the car on the day the tax is due you should be able to tax.
Unless there is evidence to suggest otehrwise this is my understanding.
My advice would actually be to speak to the post office you intend on taxing it at first especially before you run off and take out a 12 month policy for just the one day.0 -

But how are you aware?
Post office staff are told the "rules".
These include accepting self printed certs (since 30/4/10), so any that won't hold your ground and don't leave!
And not accepting one day certificates which are deemed as "legal protection" policies. So any staff member that does, just get the certificate back off em quick, pay for the disc and scarper (cos the staff member made a mistake!)
And note the weasel words used by dayinsure in a cynical way to get sales in answer to the question:Yes. dayinsure short term insurance is suitable. (At the sole discretion of the individual post office and we cannot guarentee that it will be acceptable).
If you ask at a post office before buying a policy, and get a favourable answer, then make sure the same biddy serves you when you go back!
You can cancel a 12 month policy as soon as you have the disc, and providing that's within the cooling off period and you have chosen the right company all you have to pay is the admin fee (if charged), and you get a full refund of the premium.0
