stuffed cabbage leaves - I haven't done them in ages!
sadly the cabbage I bought OH cut in half last night so probably can't salvage big enough leaves to stuff. But will be doing this soon.
Well done Bramble you have done so well.
Re the mince I made a load of dog food up as I'd said previously and when I tasted it I realised its a good stew. OH said the dog is spoilt (which he is) but I may well make the next batch for humans and doggie.
Asda have pearl barley and broth mixes for 50p a 500g bag, which should do at least 5 meals and really bulks out stews & casseroles.0 -
Thanks guys.
Paid the check in at 10am today, checked online banking and it had cleared by 12!!! amazing. So trying to find who can deliver a food shop to me tomorrow if it's at all possible!
OH is working late, so gonig to save mince and make a lasagne on sunday to cook in the week sometime. and there is 1 single burger left in the freezer so i'll have that with some potato wedges.
The first thing i REALLY want to buy is a bottle of wine!!! i've gone without wine for nearly a month!! So will try and see if any one has deals on and get a few.
I'm going to check approved foods tonight to see if they have any store cupboard/lunch things worth ordering.Annual Grocery Budget £364.00/£1500

Well Bramble thanks to your thread, I have made dinner as much from scratch as I could the last 2 days. DH was very happy to come home today and see HM spare ribs with HM barbecue sauce, HM mash and reduced price chicken kievs. A great meal that didn't cost the earth to make, and he was enjoying the spare ribs when I left him to it.
Unfortunately, my store cupboards are starving to heave! I have different types of flour for bread and cake making, herbs, spices, different sugars, soy sauce and other sauces for making marinades, etc, etc. Everything you need for making your own meal from nearly scratch if you can.0 -
Aureol212, thats great! I must admit as i was chopping up me ingredients for risotto the other night and was thinking about how much i enjoy cooking and want to do more of it. Last night was SO stressfull we cheated and got a kebab! But i'm hoping to borrow a car tonight and go food shopping and see what i can get reduced.
Our storecupboards are nearly empty!!! But we've got enough to do a proper stock up shop, and as things are gonig to be made from scratch where possible i'm going to try and focus on things that we will actually use, because, quite often i go shopping and buy things thinking they sound nice and they live in the store cupboard till we move house and then i have to throw them out!!
We've still got all that lovely fruit OH found, so going to try my hand at a crumble! I've not made one of them since i was about 12!Annual Grocery Budget £364.00/£1500

Bramble, I do loads of crumbles. For 4 portions, my stock mix is 80g each of flour, sugar, rolled oats and 90ml veg oil, plus maybe a few pumpkin seeds thrown in
you can add extra flavour in lots of different ways.
vary the sugar, so for plums, maybe use extra dark sugar.
lemon zest or ground cloves in the apples, or the crumble topping
toasted hazlenuts in topping with apples, almonds with plums
maybe some cinnamon in topping or fruit with plums
a few ground almonds in the topping
orange zest in the fruit or topping for a rhubarb one, or a bit of ground ginger, or crystalized ginger
etc, whatever sounds good really0 -
Bramble, if you have freezer space, you could make a large batch of crumble mix and store it in freezer until you need a handful or 2, a ziploc type bag works great for this. I made a batch about 18 months ago (blush!) - it was enough for about 6 full sized crumbles. And I have been using bits of it since. Which meant that when we had a glut of plums from a neighbour, I just threw together a crumble on a couple of different nights as we sat down to dinner, and I am using some with blackberries too at the minute (DH is not a great crumble fan, but I am enjoying making small versions for myself and sometimes DD in single portion dishes).GC 2010 €6,000/ €5,897
