Virgin Broadband

I am about to sign up with Virgin Broadband, but would like to ask some questions first.

I have 2 PC's in the house, my own and my sons, does one broadband connection cover both or do I need 2 modems.

The Virgin contract is for £14.99 per month and there is no 12 month tie in. They say they can provide me with 1meg service altough my search with them indicates I can get up yo 4 meg. Forgive me if I have not used the correct terms. There is also a 3 Gb download limit per month.

I hope I have not confused anybody and any advice is gratefully received.

You can only have one ADSL modem connected to an ADSL service at a time. You will either want:-
    a) an ethernet cable between the two PCs, and use ICS (but the PC connected to the modem will have to be on for the 2nd PC to access the internet).
    b) the preferred option of an ADSL modem/router. If you can easily cable from both PCs to the modem/router, which should ideally be plugged into the BT master socket, then just a standard ADSL modem/router with at least 2 ethernet ports is fine. If you can't wire easily, then go for a wireless ADSL modem/router, and wireless adapters for each PC that can't be wired to the router.

Note, there is a "tie in", of £50 if you wish to cancel within 12 months.

    samsyerman,

Just to point out this offer from Virgin, if you've not seen it.

A SIM only mobile contract for £15 month with a years free 8Mb/6Gb broadband.

The same £50 fee as in the previous post applies if you cancel before the year is up.

    The offer ends 31/10/2006.
  • I've just signed up on this deal, we already had mobiles on Virgin (pay as you go).

Took about 10 minutes on the phone (freephone) to Virgin to change one phone to £15 per month, English call centre, knew all the answers no probs.

Takes 48 hours from the phone being changed for their system to update the virgin.net, you then phone them, give them the phone number and your DOB and they sort out the broadband (also english call centre).

So £15 per month for 4 to 6 meg bband and 300 mins + 300 texts on the mobile.

English call centres, phones answered within several rings by competant knowledgeable staff.

Equipment arrived exactly when they said it would, no problems.

Compared to NTHELL who I hate very much they are a dream to deal with.
  • My experience is slightly different with phones being answered after 10 minutes+ of music only to be told my sim registration didn't appear to have gone through after the 48 hours. Not bothered though as I'm sure they will have it resolved tomorrow and as a current Virgin.net customer I'm very happy with the broadband service I have received for just over a year now.

I've just signed up to this today. The terms and conditions state:

"For customers ordering the Service on or after June 7th 2005, Virgin.net reserves the right to charge you a cancellation fee of £50.00 (fifty pounds) if you cancel your Virgin.net Broadband account within 12 months of the date your Broadband Service was activated."

I took this to mean that they may charge £50 not that they definitely would.

What are other peoples experiences if they cancel within 12 months?

another thing i've noticed is that the pay monthly sim can be cancelled at any time - i.e. no 12 month tie in.

But, the £50 charge for cancelling the broadband is applicable if broadbsnd is cancelled within the 12 months whether or not you've cancelled the pay monthly mobile contract.

does that mean you can cancel the mobile contract and still get free broadband for 12months?

  • If you cancel the sim, you start paying the standard £17.99 per month for the broadband.

I've been with virgin for a couple of years now on the £17.99 deal. I have always found their customer services very helpful, which is great as I'm a complete non techie.

I have found I lose email via Outlook express quite a bit, at least once every three or 4 weeks outlook is not available for a few hours. Two weeks ago it was down for about 18 hours in total but at least they put up a note to that effect on their webpage.

I also lose Internet explorer sometimes, I had a really bad run a few months back with losses every few hours and they eventually sent engineers to the house as there didn't seem to be any reason. They said everything was fine, and then about two weeks after their visit i stopped having any problems!

I'm just waiting for my free upgrade to 8meg now..
