Trevor Macdonald Monday night.

I think is this a must see. A woman has rung up £50,000 debt without her husband knowing and Martin tells him on television.
My husband says he would just walk out.

  • I'll watch if I remember/ get the time. I wouldn't say it sounds good for a laugh though, more like an insight into somebody else's tragedy. Whatever the husband's reaction, the negative impact on that family is going to be enormous - it's not a problem that's going to be solved overnight, and one that's probably going to take a lot of effort to solve at all. I feel really sorry for the family involved, especially those who'll have to live with the consequences of financial decisions they had no part in making.

This has been a very difficult programme to film. Actually the situation is slightly different than described - it is a couple moving in together and he isn't aware of the size of her debts. Yet there are other case studies too including a revisit of the couple from a couple of Christmas's ago.

I must admit it is a difficult programme for me - my key as always is going in and trying to help with the finances, but of course as part of that we have a confession element in the programme. I'm not in charge of the edit part and I am worried that it is possible to edit it into a 'Jerry Springer' type programme - so cross your fingers for me.

Did the couple actually consent to appearing on TV? Were they paid? Is it a bit like the 'bank of mum and dad' programme?

why was it necessary for you to actually tell the husband? why couldn't the lady just tell him herself before the programme and you just help them sort the mess out? what does this program actually aim to achieve?

Is this the one in your blog Martin? If so the poor women sounded distraught, really hope they treat it delicately for her sake but I guess we shall see!

Martin - I'm glad you said that as the little clip I saw seemed to be a 'Jerry Springer' style confession.

Pesonally there is no way that I would confess to my OH in this way for that simply reason, especially as there is no control of how the confession is portrayed and as for being paid there is not enough money on this planet for me to air my dirty linen in public.

I must admit it does sound as if the problem is going to be like watching a car crash .....don't want to see others in pain but can't look away either
