At least one in 10 people will be unemployed in half of UK regions by 2015, an economic think tank has forecast.

According to the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR), the unemployment rate will exceed 10% in Wales and the North of England.

The CEBR blamed expected huge cuts to public sector jobs. London and the South of England are expected to escape the worst of the job losses, however.

The report warns unemployment could reach as high as 11% in Wales and the North East of England - both regions where many people are dependent on the public sector for work.

"The gloomy figures released in this report may come as a surprise to some given the tentative signs of recovery in the UK labour market over recent months," said Owen James, an economist at CEBR.

"Ignoring the scale of public sector job cuts over the forecast period, however, would be misleading, as would any view that the cuts will not hit some regions harder than others."

FACT - DWP, DVLA, HRMC, DSS paper factories will all be offshored by 2015. As will all the forms processing for fixed-penalty notices and fines from the Courts.

FACT - Every time you preface a comment with "FACT" it turs out to be complete and utter crap.

Surely not.....didn't David Cameron or George Osborne, or was it the OBR, tell us that private enterprise would magic up (sorry, create) 2.5 million jobs so the loss of jobs in the public sector would be more than covered.

That surely couldn't have been a bit of spin from our new gov't could it?

Plan A - slash the public sector and expect the private sector to fill the gap, I suppose that works on the assumption that the economy is growing and people have money to spend - and what if it doesn't and they don't?

    Plan B - oops...there is no plan B

Perhaps the CEBR realise that Plan A won't work and there is no Plan B.

Business confidence in the new gov't is not exactly at an all time high at the moment is it?

The unemployment figure for the North East is already 9.4% - so not far to go to get to 10 or 11% - I would imagine it will happen long before 2015.

In the early 1980s one of my favourite bands was UB40.

UB40 was the name of the form you signed to get the Dole. They were a bunch of unemployed blokes. One of their most well-known hits was called: One in Ten. This was a direct reference to there being 1-in-10 people unemployed.
I am the one in ten
    A number on a list
I am the one in ten
    Even though I don`t exist
    Nobody Knows me
    Even though I`m always there
    A statistic, a reminder
Of a world that doesn`t care

My arms enfold the dole queue
    Malnutrition dulls my hair
My eyes are black and lifeless
    With an underprivileged stare
I`m the beggar on the corner
    Will no-one spare a dime?
I`m the child that never learns to read
    `Cause no-one spared the time

    [Chorus]

I`m the murderer and the victim
    The licence with the gun
I`m a sad and bruised old lady
In an ally in a slum
    I`m a middle aged businessman
    With chronic heart disease
    I`m another teenaged suicide
In a street that has no trees

    [Chorus]

I`m a starving third world mother
    A refugee without a home
I`m a house wife hooked on Valium
    I`m a Pensioner alone
    I`m a cancer ridden spectre
    Covering the earth
    I`m another hungry baby
    I`m an accident of birth.

    [Chorus]

The lyrics are grim reading, but of course, back then things were tougher/grimmer. Benefits weren't as generous to families, homes weren't as nice as today (little central heating, little double glazing, fewer people had cars or posh holidays or stuff). I knew people who were still using tin baths and outside loos.

Hope we don't descend to the times of "Boys from the Blackstuff" but somewhere deep inside I think without major changes, it's certainly a possibility :(

That's so true. Nearly 30% the UK adults (of working age) have no job. All this 10% nonsense is spin and bull$hit

I personally think it's probably more of a certainty than a possibility.
I also think people will sadly find things a lot harder if we have that situation since we've all become accustomed to much higher living standards these days.
Being able to remember those days,I can tell you they were dire and I hope for everyone's sakes we don't ever have to stoop so low.

Just remember that there are very, very clear projections that generating capacity won't meet demand by 2016. Dole queues, candles, no telly, no t'interweb - grim, grey, grinding austerity coming fore sure!
