Freesat

I am thinking of gettinbg Freesat soon. Has anybody got this?

I plan for the Freesat plus box inc HD. It would save lots as currently pay Sky.

Got a Sky plus box at the moment. However the Freesat appears good and the box has the same functions as Sky plus.

Thanks

  • have you thought about a sky replacement card? if you have re-set sky after your move, you can look to ebay etc for a card that will work the freesat bits of Sky+ without contract.

Disc- i take this from a conversation with one of my staff, i am not sure of cost/legal implications or even if it works, but i am sure an ebay search will add clarity and save new equiptment costs.
Marry a Foreigner, its so much cheaper!

Totally wrong - there is absolutely no need to purchase a new card as the existing subscription card will act as a FreesatFromSky card when the sub is cancelled. Besides which it is also illegal to sell Sky viewing cards (when ebay notice such sales they are immediately removed) as if you read the back of the viewing cards it actually says that the card remains the property of Sky Subscription Services. This even applies to genuine FreesatFromSky cards purchased at £20/25 as you are merely purchasing a license to use that card.

The recording part of a Sky+ will not function without a valid subscription to Sky ( minimum £10 a month ).

Freesat is a bit rubbish for HD at the mo, as only has BBC and ITV HD.

So no CH4 HD, no five HD. OK, so only the former offers any decent films in HD.;)

We are going down the same route after cancelling Virgin cable. HD channels are limited at the mo, but this will change and TBH the HD channel we watched most was BBC.

Here's the rub. If you have a Sky HD box already and want to have freesat with recording capabilities, you need to pay Sky £10 a month.

Over 2 years, that comes to the same cost as buying a Humax Foxsat-HDR, the only twin tuner satellite PVR worth buying. However by using the Sky box, you'll have access to the same HD channels but also far more SD channels (freesatfromsky has over 100 more channels than freesat), a better programme guide, RELIABLE SERIES LINK and a far better remote control. Its only once you get past month 24 that going with a Foxsat-HDR becomes cheaper and if you decide to re-subscribe to Sky before month 24, you've basically thrown your money away on the Foxsat-HDR. Its something that has been a quandry for me for some time but I came to the conclusion that paying Sky the tenner a month was a better option.

And yes there are cheaper boxes to buy which weigh the argument more in favour of buying a new STB but there's a reason why Topfield and Humax get recommended..

With an HD box FreesatFromSky also has two more HD channels - channel 4HD and Five HD and you also have the ability to pipe the RF output around the house to view on other TVs

In using a Humax Foxsat HDR for nearly 2 years, I haven't yet found that it has an unreliable series link - care to explain?
OP - you probably know by now that a Freesat box will plug directly in to replace a Sky box. Foxsat HDR is the one to go for at around £240.
