Epilepsy

My daugter has recently been diagnosed with Epilepsy as she has been suffering from seizures since early this year.

Are they any benefits that she would qualify for, the consultant mentioned applying for DLA just wondered if anyone has any experiances of applying for dla for someone with epilepsy?

DLA is about care and molbility needs, not a diagnosis, so if you daughter has them (more than a person her age would have) then you can apply.

Some people with epilepsy are controlled completely by medication - therefore, no care and /or mobility needs.

My daughter was diagnosed 10yrs ago but doesn't really have any care needs as 90% of the time she has it under control , she probably has one seizure in 18mths so if you daughter has controlled it then not really any care needs..

  • If the consultant has advised claiming DLA, then why havent you done it? Most consultants don't know anything about benefits, so am surprised they suggested it.

Thanks for your repies, as with most questions about benefits on this board people unfortuantley tend to judge rather than offering advice.

No matter i will speak with the CAB who are paid to give contructive advice rather than people who are ignorant. :D

I think you'll find some posters get advice they don't want to hear!

All people did was relate what they know or their own experience.

No one has judged or been ignorant.

I am sorry but how are we being ignorant??????....you have posted asking about our experiances of DLA and epilepsy, but I would of thought that your child's consultant would know best about their medical condition and if they have advised to claim DLA, then dont you have your answer????

How will CAB know better than your consultant?

    Confused!

 Vader said that DLA is based on care and /or mobility needs and I said that not everyone with epilepsy will have these.

There are a few people on here who claim DLA for epilepsy and others that may have been turned down because it's all controlled by medication - therefore, no extar care or mobility needs.

Thats rubbish, most consultants dont have a clue about DLA, my sons consultants mention it all the time but he dosnt have care or mobility issues above a normal 14 year old.

The JC+ are even worse, my husband gets told to apply for DLA all the time because hes in the support group of ESA (for now) but again he has no care or mobility issues.

OP if your child has care or mobility needs above a normal child there age claim DLA, if they dont have extra needs its not worth the pain the prossess causes.
