I assumed the OP would be listening to their own iPod, mp3 player or whatever.... I would.

    So did I, googler

    - then the way my brain works, I thought of the thousands of people who buy their own phones for in-flight movies etc and remembered that not all airlines have the same jack, some have a two pin thing etc !

Ear defenders are useful but after an hour or two's wear they do get very sweaty and uncomfortable. Peltors are however better than any others IME. You could go the whole hog, I suppose, and buy a pair of active noise cancelling 'phones like the Peltor Sportac but at over £100 this wouldn't be in the OP's price range I suspect.

Sennheiser CX300 or CX500 (if you can find any) are comfortable and not that expensive (should be able to get the 300's for around £25-30) and are way better than anything over-ear - especially on long-haul. Personally use the 300's and 500's on long-haul (regular trips to NZ and the far east) and wouldn't consider anything else to drown out or hide the constant hiss of the air conditioning.
My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016). :(

For those seeking more detailed advice and guidance regarding small claims cases arising from private parking issues I recommend that you visit the Private Parking forum on PePiPoo.com

Quite right, I'm not a fan of most airlines' in-flight entertainment.
