I second the sennehiser px200 available from £19.99 from one of the Play sellers or £24.99 from Play

Because of their folding design and slightly fiddly protective case, I wouldnt necessarily reccomend them for everyday use (unless you can leave them unfolded as I tend to) but for occasional long haul flights they'd be excellent. I'm not sure that technically they are "noise cancelling" but they do an excellent job of keeping the source sound in (no leakage to irritate nearby passengers) and the noise of outside world out and I find the sound qulaity excellent on classical, jazz, pop and rock music!Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!0 -
I bought a pair of Klipsch Image X1 in-ear Headphones and they really do cut out so much noise. Ive used them on aircraft and they were way ahead of my old sony active noise cancelling ones.
I highly recommend them. (They are under £20 on Amazon etc)0 -
I've spent ages moaning about Apple headphones and other cheap ones that get sent with an MP3 Player, so I finally decided to buy a pair of Klipsch Image S4 in-ear last year.
They cost about £50-60 but I will never go back to using any of my previous headphones. Sound quality is so much better, and you can actually hear the bass in music plus they are very good at removing background noise. Sometimes I can't even hear people talking to me when their standing right next to me, which is quite useful when you get told to do something you don't want to. They also come with different sized rubber in-ear bits in case you have really big or small ears to make it more comfortable for you.0 -
C'mon guys, more sensible suggestions please !
The ear defenders IS a sensible solution. They do what they're supposed to do - keep external noise out.
They don't require any battery power.
They allow you to continue using your current ear-bud phones.
They're cheaper than Sony, Bose, etc
A workmate of mine needs to transcribe lectures on a daily basis on his bus commute, and he's been doing this for years, because it works.0 -
Go to B&Q, get a pair of ear defenders, and, using a regular pair of ear buds, place the ear defenders over the top of them.
Cheap and cheerful, but not stylish.
We are supposed to use ear defenders in our server room and can definitely recommend the above method!
Tried my noise cancelling headphones in the server room, and there is a small but significant enough difference and if you concentrate, you are able to guess the tune. Througly recommend Peltor Optime III ear defenders, but they do get a bit warm.
Even on noisy tubes the sound from my headphones get washed out, though not brave enough to try ear defenders in public.0 -

My apologies for laughing!
Just not very glam for a girlie like me!0 -
Well, I just want to thank you all for your great replies and suggestions. I'm off to check Amazon out, and the other websites you have mentioned.0

So you need to prioritise;
For the sake of 4 flights a year, do you want a solution that works and looks quite basic, or do you want a solution that advertises to your fellow travellers that you're hip to the latest expensive fashion trend in earphones......?
What's the priority? The music, or the appearance?0 -
I use Sennheiser ie8s - but they are close to £200.I shot a vein in my neck and coughed up a Quaalude.

I bought Sony noise-cancelling headphones from eBay for less than £20. Then I panicked that I'd been done and they would be fakes when I realised they were coming from either China or Hong Kong, which is fair enough considering the price for the same ones elsewhere were around £50.
Used them on a long haul flight and there was a definite difference when I switched on the noise-cancelling so I'm happy with them.0
