Timetable clashes with job -help!!!

Hello
I work for a large supermaket and we do all we can to accomodate college students.
I think they are being very short sighted as they have invested alot of time and money in trainining your daughter.
We have students who are about to go off to uni and we will be taking all of the ones who would like to come back, on at Christmas.
Good luck to your daughter.0 -
I think her job should have tried to change her hours, however I also think she's crazy to be working so many hours while at uni.0

15 hours max???!!! It should be 15hrs min!!!
During my a-levels I worked 20-24 hours a week at my part time job.
1st year at uni 15-30.
2nd year 12-35
Ive just started my third year and been promoted:eek:
The above hours were term time. 35-48 hols.
My degree is in religion and I work in hospitality. I think that if anyone if serious about their financial future, the best advice that I could give is- analyse your social life. Assess how many hours you spend watching tv which could be spent earning. I get my social life out of work so I havnt lived the typical student lifestyle. The best part of it is that I'm saving my loan for a deposit, which is making money in an ISA and living off the money I make at work. 1st years in any 'soft' degree like religion and the endless others, have no excuse. You should be working. My CV looks a lot better than other students CVs. Dont let your Uni tell you how how many hours you can work. My Uni says I shouldnt be doing more than 15 hpw but they dont give me any financial support so why should I listen? Other students think Im strange for working so much but it turns out that theyre jealous. Universities should be encouraging students to work longer hours so that they are prepared for hard work in the future. I met so many truly lazy students in my first year and they are the ones who complain most about debt. I hate listening to people moan about student debt if they wont get off their own !!!! and do something about it.
If anyone doesnt like what I have to say, Im guessing your parents add tidy sums to your accounts each month, or you must be so popular that you need to be seen everywhere.0 -

I have worker for them for the past 5 years 4 of which were as a student, but this scheme only came into place about a years ago and i believe that there are certain condition to you recieving this money i.e. that you have to do a certain amount of hours during term time and more during holidays and you have to stay with them for a certain amount of years. I wish they had done this when i was at uni.0 -
freebie_junkie wrote:is this your daughters 2nd or 3rd year now? our uni doesnt recoemend any more than 13 hours in 2nd year or 8 hours in 3rd year, as they are weighted 30% and 70% towards your final degree and dont have to just be passed like first year. i think 20 hours would have been far too much. i now work for myself, so i can work how much and how often i want, is this a possibility for your daughter?
What do you work as?_________0 -
looks like i'm screwed i work 40 hours a week as well as going to uni.freebie_junkie wrote:is this your daughters 2nd or 3rd year now? our uni doesnt recoemend any more than 13 hours in 2nd year or 8 hours in 3rd year, as they are weighted 30% and 70% towards your final degree and dont have to just be passed like first year. i think 20 hours would have been far too much. i now work for myself, so i can work how much and how often i want, is this a possibility for your daughter?

can you not apply for help with travel from your council or uni, dont know about the rent thoughNo Links in Signature by site rules - MSE Forum Team 20 -
that's a bit hard
I work for a supermarket (I'll leave it unnamed) and I'm also a student.
I had my hours changed a little last year and will have to get them changed next week to accommodate my new timetable. I've never had a problem getting my hours moved a little. A lot of the weekend staff are students so the managers are used to it now.
I wouldn't recommend 20 hours. I've been contracted to about 12 hours a week. There's always overtime for the holiday season and during term time I more or less just stick to what I'm contracted to work.0 -
i dont live in halls i live at home and the travel is basically petrol money to get me back and forth which works out cheaper than paying nearly a fiver a day for two buses each way.C_Ronaldo wrote:can you not apply for help with travel from your council or uni, dont know about the rent though
bascially its a mess i got myself into so i have to struggle through it i guess
thing is the job i'm at is very quiet, so most weekends (after september) i can take my uni work in with me and get on with it while also getting paid. i work in a call centre so only take calls as they come in.
thats 16 hours a week spent on studies outside of the teaching hours.
plus i have access to the i'net all week so when its quiet in the week i can do loads of reading.
its not ideal as i get disturbances now and again but its definitly the best way of juggling everything at the moment.
hopefully by the third year i can cut my hours down if need be as they are also very felxible and always help me work my hours round uni.
its tireing but i'll cope - i got through my first year at basically a 2:1 level (average grade was 12/13 out of 15)
BACK ON TOPIC : as for travel, students 16-18 get it worst as they are classed as adult in terms of fare prices but dont qualify for all the student discounts and benifits you get when 18 and doing HND or higher0 -
In that case, it seems it's the loan and credit cards that are costing you so much; have you spoken to a money adviser at the university or Students' Union?yeslek wrote:i dont live in halls i live at home and the travel is basically petrol money to get me back and forth which works out cheaper than paying nearly a fiver a day for two buses each way
It may well be that they could assist with rescheduling/freezing interest, if you haven't done so already, and there is also additional hardship funding available in some cases. No university is going to want to see you having to work so many hours if there is a viable alternative.
Mel.Though no-one can go back and make a brand-new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand-new ending.
